Darn although I have the books I cannot seem to find the poem or reference I am looking for. Something to the effect that I love your cunt I want to make a hubcap out of it -I cannot remember the exact reference and maybe I was drunk when I thought this was in one of Leonard texts but I think it was. HA HA
Any ideas? -I just love this reference and have never forgotten it - Very Brave New World esque –Lord Ford and all -interesting since a vehicle is often used to describe how people want to be perceived. Hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I remember it was a powerful little blurb -well it was in my mind anyhow
Reads like something Holden Caulfield would say in The Catcher in the Rye. But then, what do I know, i'm just another phony.
New York (Joe's Pub), April 24th 2007 / Dublin, June 14th 2008 / Dublin, June 15th 2008 / New York, February 19th 2009 / Dublin, July 20th 2009 / Barcelona, September 21st 2009 / Sligo...here I come!
I can recall only poems from the Energy of Slaves... "The photograph tells you / the way you hold your cunt / is old-fashioned" and another memorable "cunt" in the manifesto-poem "My own music / is not merely naked / It is open-legged / It is like a cunt / and like a cunt / must needs be houseproud" etc. I can't recall any other memorable use of that particular word in the poems... http://www.webheights.net/cohenconcordance/index.htm shows 3 more use in the same book, but true, Death of a Lady's Man isn't indexed yet, and I guess that word was prominent in those two books in the 1970s. Leonard's angry years, at least in poetry.
Hmmm I will search through Death of a Ladies Man tonight -it may be in there if I find it I will report back but I am positive it is one of Leonard's pieces.
Well I guess this chick was a little drunk?? -it has been a while since I read the passage but I found it last night thanks to your help - it is in Death of A Ladies Man -Under You Have no Form -making your cunt into the chrome of the radiator cap of my Buick (something more like that) -aha ha ha -I was close but so very far away - I was really appreciate the feedback -I loved my version of the phrase much better –though -God thanks again folks
Red Poppy -go south comment was was very funny -wrong sex but still super funny
none of us would be here
without it
the whole of culture
hanging upside down
men are born from it
and spen the rest of their lives trying
to get back in
the door is closing fast
culture is back.
You have no form, you move along, yet do
not move, the relics of exhausted thought
of which you are not made, but which give world to
you, who are of nothing made, nothing wrought.
There you long for one who is not me, O
queen of no subject, newer than the morning,
more antique than first seed dropped bellow
the wash where you are called and Adam born.
And here, not your essence, not your absence
weds the emptiness which is never me,
though these motions and these formless events
are preparation for humanity,
and I get up to love and eat and kill
not by my own, but by our married will.
YOU HAVE NO FORM
They should cast your cunt in chrome for the radiator cap of a Buick.
