Context is everything ...
my eyes are brokered
by the dreams that rouse them
only less significant
is the lie
lazy in its opulence
dangling like a jewel
from its twisted chain
it is where you and I falter
fall clumsily
into an effortless embrace
talking in past tenses
taken in by the patterns
of shadow on the wall
here is the echo
there is the shout
the scavenger words
in the tedium of message
here is where we
circling
await clarity
bile
scratching the back of our tongues
Context is everything ...

Context is everything ...
"Clarence said a striking thing about rowing that I've always valued ... that he liked rowing because you were approaching life backward. You could clearly see the past, and you glanced quickly at the future over your shoulder.' Jim Harrison.

Hi Vern,
I really like your poem. The word, "brokered" with its sound and appearance (close to broken)that comes between the images of the eyes and dreams seems to set the stage for all of the disconnection and the images of shadow, echo that conjure up the distance between what is real and what is appearance.
Very well done.
Joe
