The Long Tunnel of Wanting You
So how much will you need to drink tonight
before you fall in love again?
What lips will you kiss, what hands will pass over your body,
what voice will promise to be your friend?
What mask will you wear, what lie will you exercise
trying to shut away some other point of view?
Just who will you leave behind tonight
lost in this long tunnel of wanting you?
And what cross will you bear on your shoulders
when the next one turns his back and leaves?
Whose side will you take, what wrong will you justify
when circumstances descend impossible to relieve?
Who will hold you tonight and take to your bed
when the party is over and your happiness is through?
Just another hamstrung drifter wandering
down this long tunnel of wanting you.
And who will hold your child tonight
when the room spins too much for you to stand?
Who will forgive you tonight, help you home tonight,
close your eyes, satisfy your curiosity, kiss your hand?
There is this light that covers your eyes,
and through your body it shines through.
I wait somewhere lonely, haggard, and broken
down the long tunnel of wanting you.

The Long Tunnel of Wanting You
I really enjoyed your poem.
It neatly defined the hollow sorrow and aching that I, too, have felt before.
You truly are a "beautiful loser."
Cheers,
Natalie
