His name was always mentioned by someone I really appreciated. And it was another person each time, in a different period of my life. I used to know a few things about him, so the last time I heard of him, I decided to dive in his world (recently, I must say!).
I bought "The death of a ladies' man"(not the best to begin with, but I loved the cover photo!). I didn't realise how soon I had all his discography, his poems and so many...It didn't surprise me the fact that he lived on Hydra,I find him very close to a Greek's mind. It's hard to say what attracted me most; his words, his voice, his irresistible glance, the way he lives his life. Besides, according to Nana Isaia (an old friend of LC and writer of a book based on him), everybody on Hydra, men and women were in love with him;and it was something natural...

Thank you for sharing that so understandable reality, Sophia. You're right that it's very difficult to separate out the qualities that make Leonard, Leonard... as to what and why, when everything just all came together into a single entity by the name of Leonard Cohen.

I'm not sure when I fell in love with Leonard Cohen, because his poetry and music existed well before I came into this world. He has always been around.

I named my son Cohen and I will make sure that Leonard is always around for him as well. Not to hard though, since I listen to Leonard everyday and I have his poetry tattooed on me.

Welcome to the Forum, Ms. Cohen Poetry Tattoo :D ~ Which lines have you imbedded in yourself?

It's heartening to see that Leonard has always been around for someone and that they've embraced his presence. How old are you?

Well thank you!

I have on the inside of my right forearm - I came by myself to a very quite place.

and on my right bicep I have a poem titled song

I almost went to bed
without remembering
the four white violets
I put in the button-hole
of your green sweater

and how I kissed you then
and you kissed me
shy as though I'd
never been your lover

An add on about Leonard's music--and getting into it. My son, now 16, is an avid Beatles, Dylan and of course Cohen fan. It makes me almost fall over laughing when he claims this music as an almost personal discovery. He speaks with total authority about how there are no real musicians nowadays.
I can still remember when he was about 9 and I suddenly heard this voice in the back seat of my vehicle, singing Dylan " She makes love just like a woman but she breaks just like a little child" He also comments that no cover on Leonard is as good as the original. He has never heard me say such things-- I love everything. Well almost everything/ The really funny thing is that he is not the only 16 year old who talks this way. Just the most recent one.

I can remember when my son was very young and I would hear him singing songs where Cohen and Dylan lyrics got mixed together and would come out like

How does it feel?
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a bird on the wire
Like a drunk in a midnight choir

lovely lazariuk
I am so amazed at how loved my favourite musicians are. I grew up thinking that I could not judge well due to the fact that I had no talent myself. Now generations of music lovers have shown me that my judgments were right on! Very validating. And even more precious when our children get it!

Yes, VERY precious when your children get it, Theresa :D ... and then claim it as their own. It sounds like your son has very discriminating tastes 8) .

Jack  ... that's very funny with your son.

hi everyone!

well, if it is about falling in love with LC, i must confess i cannot remember when i fell in love with him.
it seems he has always been there for me ... time has no value when it comes about him.

the only important thing is that he is the master of my soul now.

i wonder if he has any clue about his power upon me, upon us ...
Waiting for the miracle to come...

Hi Silvergreen ~

I'm not sure how much you've had a chance to explore the Forum, yet; but September 21st is coming up fairly quickly. An annual tradition we have here is the opportunity to express that very thing, how much he means to us individually. A designated thread is created for that very purpose and Leonard, without any question, without any doubt, absolutely reads it. Jarkko delivers it to him electronically, when it's deemed as being 'finished;' though, invariably, there are add-ons and additional threads which people create for the same purpose. So, if you care to, you'll be able to... some think of what they want to say well ahead of time, whereas others just wing it when the time comes.
