I don't think you should include DGHWYHO. It doesn't give the true picture of what LC is all about. Its more of a novelty song. I would include True Love Leaves No Traces and I always liked Memories (but that could be considered another novelty song).
Anything that doesn't kill you only serves to postpone the inevitable.

That's a good way of putting it, Madison. They really are both novelty songs. Fun to sing and play around with; yet, for further down the road when you want to show other sides of Leonard.

[Some might argue that these sides are already there in his work, so why not; point taken, but since you know that I know that you know what I mean, we won't need to go any further with that here, for these purposes  . Or, maybe no one will say that at all, except me, and I just did, anticipatively  .]

Anyway, I think that sums it up, Madison.

Just a small point. You cannot introduce people to The Master. They must find their own way to him, or it really won't mean that much to them.

p.

p.s. Aren't you glad I saved you the trouble of making all those tapes?

DOALM

Post by blonde madonna »

Wow Tom
I am new here but you are a font of knowledge on things I never knew I wanted to know! Rules for mixes, I'm going there. Previous songs and unreleased albums, I'm feeling the urge to search.
DOALM is my favourite Cohen album because I first heard it as a teenager and if I was making a mix for a teenager I would definately put DGHWYHO on it because it is so funny. Maybe it isn't a man's song, maybe it is too close to home for men?

All I want to know is one thing, Blonde Madonna... what is your avatar  ? A wink because, beyond its appearing to be a pyramid and . . . , I really don't know. It remains a serious question, though. I like it.

Welcome to the Forum :D ... and, yes, you called it right. Tom is, indeed, an everflowing fountain of knowledge 8) .

Hi Lizzy
I pirated it from the cover of a book, The Red Tree by a wonderful Australian illustrator Shaun Tan.
I love books as well as LC's music and now Tom, through sending me to visit the mixtape rule site, has put me on to another Nick Hornby book I have to read-Songbook.
Those of you who enjoyed High Fidelity should also see the movie with John Cusack and Jack Black.

Welcome to the Forum, blonde_madonna. I noted your writings about The Essential yesterday, I agree with you. DOALM is one of or usual topics - I think that since I came to this Forum years ago, we always come back to arguing that the album is great (many of course not agreeing:-).
Here's a snippet about the poem/song which gave you the nickname - they say (I can't know is it true) that St. Francis reference comes from the fact that the song was originally started for the movie Brother Sun Sister Moon. Leonard was even supposed to act in it, but after he dropped out of project, Donovan came in.

As you know, you always have to walk *in front* of your Master (i.e. he has to walk behind, as every real Master does:-)

I met a man who lost his mind
in some lost place I had to find,
follow me the wise man said,
but he walked behind.
