Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to Announce 2007 Inductees

Dec 12, 2006 5:22 PM

Of the nine original nominees for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, which were announced in October, five have been chosen. The Foundation will release the names of the five inductees in a press release on January 8, 2007. The nine nominees for 2007 induction are Chic, The Dave Clark Five, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, R.E.M., The Ronettes, Patti Smith, The Stooges, Joe Tex and Van Halen.

To be eligible for nomination into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, an act must have released its first single or album at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination. This year's nominees had to release their first single no later than 1981.

Also in January, the Hall will launch its exhibit on The Vans Warped Tour, titled “Warped: 12 Years of Music, Mayhem and More,” which documents the tour and its impact. Three noted punk bands will perform at the gala kick-off ceremony on January 26, 2007 at the museum in Cleveland, Ohio: Pennywise, The Used and Paramore. Kevin Lyman, the tour's founder, will also be on hand. The exhibit will run through September 2007.

i have no idea who the mastermind is behind the choosing of nominees but every year that YankovicGretzky posts them I am gobsmacked not only at the exclusion of our man but at the inclusion of no marks like the Dave Clark Five. They were crap when they were at their peak and they are crap now.

The Rock Hall has lowered its inductee list from 7 to 5 artists per year now. This sucks.

Not exactly the time to lower their standards, too, is it  .

For Immediate Release:

THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCES ITS INDUCTEES FOR 2007

New York -- The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation today announces its inductees for 2007. The inductees are:

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five (Kid Creole, Cowboy, Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel, Mr. Ness, Raheim)
R.E.M. (Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, Michael Stipe)
The Ronettes (Estelle Bennett, Ronnie Spector, Nedra Talley)
Patti Smith
Van Halen (Michael Anthony, Sammy Hagar, Alex Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen, David Lee Roth)

The five inductees will be honored at a ceremony on March 12, 2007 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. Presenters and performers at the induction will be announced in February, 2007. “We couldn’t be more proud to honor this unique, diverse group of rockers, rappers, singers and poets. This is what rock and roll is all about,” said Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation President and C.E.O., Joel Peresman.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on March 12, 2007 will also honor Ahmet Ertegun, legendary founder of Atlantic Records. Ertegun, who was a crucial figure in the careers of artists ranging from Ray Charles to Aretha Franklin to the Rolling Stones to Led Zeppelin, was instrumental in founding and was the Chairman of the Foundation. The Rock Hall Museum in Cleveland’s main exhibit hall is the Ahmet Ertegun Exhibition Hall.

The 2007 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, R.E.M., The Ronettes, Patti Smith and Van Halen were chosen by the 600 voters of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. Artists are eligible for inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25 years after their first recording is released.

In addition to being honored at the ceremony on March 12, 2007, each artist who is inducted is commemorated within the I.M. Pei-designed museum in Cleveland, Ohio. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame displays the signature of each inductee inscribed in glass. In addition, there is an exhibit of artifacts from this year’s inductees, and a multi-media film presentation with highlights from each artist’s career. The exhibit on this year’s inductees will open in March, 2007 and will run for one year.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has changed its website format. Let me just say it looks awful. I miss the old site already! They have stopped posting photos of the inductees along with their biographies. Now its just biographies. Plus the names of all the inductees that used to run along the top of the screen is now at the bottom of the screen. Everything is bigger now!

I don't know about website production/upgrading, Yankovic, but is it possible that they had the "old site" hold the place of the new one, whilst repairs/changes/upgrades were being made to the latter?

I was originally going to suggest that, perhaps, they'd received so many complaints that they returned to the latter, but given the timing between your postings here, I'm guessing that's not the case, unless it's been awhile since you checked there, as well, and the "old one" had been up for awhile, until so many complaints were received.

Or, are you at a computer that needed to be Refreshed?

[Still trying to understand this electronic realm.] Anyway, glad the new site is back.

Well Patti Smith and the Ronettes absolutely, but where's Arthur Lee? Somehow I don't feel it would be appropriate for Leonard to be in the rock 'n roll hall of fame!

EXCELLENT!!!!! I like all the inductees, even Grandmaster Flash. I'm happy Patti Smith FINALLY made it!!!! And it kind of freaks me out about R.E.M. I love R.E.M. but... they were making music when I was in junior high. I feel like I'm getting too old. :( Sad to see the Stooges didn't make it this year. Van Halen will be interesting. I know they just regrouped with David Lee Roth to tour again, but someone told me today that they just canceled all their tour dates! Perhaps it wasn't such a good idea, as Diamond Dave is and always will be an undeserving prick.
