The first note - how you found LC and how it affected you

I was about 19 when my sailor sang "I loved you in the morning etc" to me - we listened to the album and I was hooked for life.

Reading what all of you have to say about how you found him has been a sort of deja vu experience for me, it's exactly what I found in his music and thought I was alone in, until I found this site about 18 months ago - everything that's been said here has been said so eloquently that all I can add is that Leonard talks to my soul and says in his words and music what I feel but can't express.

Very little was heard about him in South Africa - and those who had heard his music rolled their eyes and said that they would certainly listen to him when they felt suicidal enough. Until recently I had only heard his music from his CDs and read some of his poetry books - but dear Pete sent me some 'live' recordings and videos and suddenly Leonard is real - a person - no longer a myth or legend, and so much more substantial: Thank you seems so inadequate, Pete.

His music has been a background to my life - but the phrase that reverberates most often is dance me through the panic til I'm gathered safely in as that's what his music and poetry have done for me more often than I care to admit.

Thank you Jarrko, thank you all of you from the forum and from the chatroom, and of course a thank you to my sailor also

and most of all - THANK YOU MR COHEN...

Jo, what a beautiful personal account - I'm sure I've heard LC described as a "troubador of the heart" (amongst other things). Anyway, I think you've captured this aspect of his impact so well and in such a touching way

I grew up with his music!
My dad used to 'subject' me to Leonard's music. I just didn't get it!
Then about 10 yrs ago (at the ripe old ago of 13) it just clicked!
Im now running my own Leonard website! ...funny old world!

many years ago, too long to remember I was a Neil Diamond fan and came across his album entitled "rainbow". It was a compilation of other songwriters songs and I heard "Suzanne" for the first time I was so struck with the song that I checked out who it was by' a writer called Leonard Cohen, I had never heard of the guy but tracked him down' I then bought my first album of his "songs of" I then embarked on a wonderful journey of discovery. To use a Quote of Cohen himself "Here was my world , here was my landscape" It's a journey I hope has still many miles to run.

hello everyone
This is my first time on a 'message board' of any description. So a little nervous.
I first heard leonard cohen about 20 years ago when my brother introduced me to him. At first i was not sure...probably because of the usual cliched responce of my peers. But soon i grew in my appreciation and now i am constantly listening to the 'beauty within' the words and music.
However, it has been a singular occupation as all these peers still do not 'get it'. So to find such a forum as this is so exciting. Thank you to everyones messages they make v. interesting and thought provoking reading
