Advice for Michael.

Advice for Michael.

Yes, you scrawl about a bear
seeking food by the river.

Yes, you scribble of salmon
swimming upstream, about to leap.

Yet your poem is incomplete
until bear and salmon meet.

I LOVE this, Andrew... its simplicity and reality... its clarity and truth.

Is your middle name Michael  ?

It's great to see you here, again 8) .

Dear Lizzy,
A couple of things: my middle name isn't Michael. He happens to be "my best friend".
His mention in the title is the stuff of another post, but this is the closest I've reached to a definition of poetry, so far 8) .
And as for that Byron: well, he would say that, wouldn't he? :D

More later,
it's getting late, and I've got work tomorrow.

I wanted to comment on this but never did. This may well be your best and yet most elusive effort. It doesnt make sense at first read but there is a symmetry to the image (for want of a better expression). It has a haiku-like twist.

Dear Kush,
Thanks for your considered reply.
There's a history behind this piece: my best friend, Michael, showed me a poem he'd written and asked for comments/ analysis/ criticism.
His poem (the subject of which remains private), was long, too long in my opinion. Yes, it read well, yet my writing mantra has always been " when in doubt, cut it out".
Hence my reply.
Michael said my poem resonated with his life, offered a metaphor, worked on several levels.
I'll read it in 2 week's time, and Michael will be in the audience.

Andrew.
