Just a guess, but I think it may have been an early girlfriend called anne sherman, that he met in New York while at University there. It's been said she was the character named Shel in The favourite game.

Hi Margaret - thanks for that piece of information. I am going to re-read The favourite Game over the weekend to try and put some flesh to the bones

I must admit that I shamelessly cribbed this for a Valentines card for a girl I was madly in lust with named (no prizes here) Annie

Cribbed as in plagiarism!?! No prizes on that either!!! Well, you already said it with "shamelessly," so I won't belabour the point.

OK, OK......point well taken. I've just lightened up on you, John....having been approached from elsewhere on the strength of my reaction, and backed by solid reason, I've been convinced that I must give you the same break I might give Leonard on a couple other pieces  . From a woman's view, however, should you ever be tempted in such a direction again.....it means just as much, every bit as much, that you took the time to find exactly the right poem, for both her and your sentiments for her, and then wrote it out yourself! I hope she was pleased with your gesture.
