Sir George Hubert Wilkins
Australian Englishman was honoured during the First World War
He would not fire a weapon upon the enemy
But he would capture the horror of the trenches
When his time came, he acted in respect for mankind
To the best of his resources
The camera at this time being a relatively new French Invention
It had already travelled widely over Europe

But its use as a tool to spread the wonder of the earth
Was only being established when in 1914 trouble struck
Mostly to this date it was a plaything of the Aristocracy
After the war his character and purpose seems to have changed
He tried to honour the deaths of Gallipoli
Then was sparked into an air race
His plane crashing before its destination
This is not an uncommon reaction to daily life
Even less to war
He was a party to one of Shackleton’s last attempts at the south
He was the ornithologist then
He witnessed global pressures and understood weather
Demanding a global study of this localised phenomenon
He was in the Soviet circa 1922 and saw famine
With someone else flying he managed an aeronautical feat over the Arctic
He was knighted in June
He dated and then married an Aussie lassie
Wilkins married Suzanne Evans, stage name Suzanne Bennett

He didn’t spend much time with her, they had separate ambitions
He much more inclined towards the poles
