What do you think about the cover versions available on the Soundtrack of the film?

I voted for the Handsome Family, though I did go to the UK tribute concert and Teddy Thompson was brilliant too, I had never heard him before.

because one can only add 10 answers when creating a poll.
Otherwise I would have included all the songs of course.

In my opinion the best is "Anthem". Those who Took Manhattan in 2004 already knew it, and that we have been lucky to see the DVD too.

For me, "Anthem" is in the line of "The Future", I did not accept it well in its time, too much pessimistic point of view. I believe that it is a hymn to overcome the dark, if it's possible. "There is a crack in everything, That's how the light gets in". This "Anthem" reaches an extraordinary power with the voices and the energy of Perla and Julie. If we remember the film, especially at the end of the song, there is a great emotion between them and I believe that there is memory, gratefulness and Leonard's presence.

Anth, also Antony shocked me  . But if you let yourself to go, this version creates a magnificent atmosphere. I have voted for this song. Anyway "If it is your will" is a marvel.

Also I have liked "The Traidor". It's other one of fundamental songs of Cohen in my life. I was thinking that a woman could not sing this song, of course Martha can, she looks as having been a Woman of Action. A very powerful interpretation.

In the film we can see "Hallelujah", in her turn M. Wainwright sings:

"Yeah but I remember, yeah when I moved in you,
And the holy dove, she was moving too,
Yes every single breath that we drew was Hallelujah.
" "Hallelujah (v.2)"

Well, why not? The poetry admits many interpretations and ways, for sure Martha can find theirs.

When we went out of the cinema, a friend said to me that it seemed to him that they were singing artificial, in a high tone. I do not have idea of sing techniques, but I remember very excessive and histrionic performances. It was a parade of curious characters. I enjoy with different covers and different ways of understanding the Cohen's work. "I'm Your Man" entertained me very much.

But there are covers that I cannot understand. An example is the "Tonight will be fine" of Teddy Thompson. For me this song speaks about desire, wait, flirtation, the looks... Well I know, with Cohen nothing is so evident and easy ("fine... for a while"). But, Why Teddy is so dramatic? What kind of lover will be?

FYS

Glad to see we agree on so much. Having seen Teddy do Tonight and Future several times, I've grown to really appreciate his interpretations.

Hope you get a chance to hear his wildy unusual reggae rendition of Waiting for the Miracle. As I think I posted after Dublin. I hated it the first night. It is on my top five list of LC songs, and this was very different. But, relaxing with it time two, it is now one of all-time favorite LC covers.

Teddy's new album is also quite good.... and sister Kami is really special. Hope her first cd will be out soon.

Envy those getting to see the Spanish tribute... think it very exciting that Perla will again be joined by Anjani, and this time by ADAM Cohen as well.
Have a ball!

Europe is such a 'tidy, little' place; everything so nearby and easy to get to with much cheaper plane fares :) .

A thrill it would be to see Adam 8) ... Adam and Anjani and Perla... lucky those who get to go :D .

Enjoy to the max!

I am still in your first step to reach the love for the reggae "Waiting for the Miracle" with Teddy & Kami (Dublin 2006): I am in the hate. I have to try to improve my skill of relax. Now it seems to me very lengthy and boring.

"The Future " is convincing, very good interpretation, as "Tonight will be fine", but, for "Tonight " his performance, his way of feeling the song is very different from mine. Instead of illusion for a fine night, it seems that he is in the point to start to cry. It is not the Cohen's saddest song. I think.

Teddy Thompson has the inheritance of the leader of Fairport Convention. The Wainwrights are sons of famous too. All of them friends and they have joined to give a tribute to Leonard Cohen. Interesting.

Yes, we will take part in a tribute to Cohen again, where there will be his dears and a lot of good artists. We wait to meet some local readers of this forum together with the "boss" of the site. "This night will be fine". I hope that you could come.

Wish we could join and meet you FYS, and again enjoy time with our wonderful friends the Arjatsalo's. Just not in the cards unfortunately.

Do hope someone will video and share with us!

It's ok if we don't agree on everything. Esther Cohen was not fond of Waiting for the Miracle, (albeit our recording and playback equipment was poor), but Perla said she really thought Teddy should release it as a single or add to his next album. She called it "brilliant".

And, Hal Willner offered at the Wainwright Christmas show......"That MMOH Hallelujah that caused a ruckus in Dublin? Leonard loved it!"

Cannot verify the truth of the statement, but he said it while giving out some hope that the Came so Far tributes might not be totally dead yet.

Earlier in this thread we've made mention of Adam..... I'm quite certain that he will give very special interpretations. Anxious to learn which song(s) he will perform. As also mentioned, I know that Anjani and Perla will be worth the price of admission by themselves.

Enjoy immensely -- and the Christmas season as well!

I am pleased to hear that Leonard loved the MMOH Hallelujah. I enjoyed it, too. It was nice to hear something other than a straight cover of that song. When I talked about the show after I had just seen it, I called that song more like an art piece.

As I still didn't find the time to listen to Dick's recording, I can't say much about MMOH's Hallelujah, but I am VERY FOND of Waiting for the Miracle and every cover of it (is there any?!!) would make me happy, and Teddy is very good artist, so bring it on!

Listening to all those audience recordings and watching the movie, and realising there's no Laurie Anderson, or Marc Ribot, or new performers from Dublin, and all that great songs unreleased, I still hope there's even a little sign of hope that one day, one day Willner will produce limited edition, like 3-disc selection from all nights from NYC, Brighton, Dublin and Melbourne, on some small label. We don't need Verve for such thing. And I don't need the video (Lunson's film was mostly uninteresting except for Leonard's parts; directorial approach was similar to broadcasts from the Moon; she zoomed into the nose and pimples, crazy).

Dick, then you have the responsibility of these commentaries:

http://www.leonardcohenfiles.com/dublin.html

Well, and the people who has left it to my scope; thank you very much !!!

This "Hallelujah" and the "Because of" look like a gather of a witches' sabbath. I would like to see this strange personage in live. (Though I criticise them really they amuse me and I am interested in them.)

The atmosphere in Dublin was marvellous. Really this material must be released.

It's forbidden to record concerts, in our case is for fans' use without commercial interest. If these shows were released officially, as "I'm your man", its higher quality will allow us to do without the audience captures.

For the present, here there are three takes about which we have spoken. The space that my Internet provider has given me it's already exhausted. This way I have cut the songs and I have reduced the quality, in origin already was audience. Excuse me , it's temporal, soon I have to erase them. It's just to have an idea.

Teddy & Kami Thompson - Waiting for the miracle Almost 9 minutes of the same matter, I think that Teddy wanted to show us the long and boring thing that is to wait for a miracle.
