Things Aren't Gonna Change

Post by John K. »

The kids are grown, the lawns been mowed
The trash is at the curb.
The cat's been fed, the mail's been read
It's all calm in our world.
The laundry's done, you're having fun
Watching TV again.
The bills are paid, but I've not been laid
Since I can't remember when.

Oh, things aren't gonna change around here.
But all I gotta do is say I'm going for a beer.
You'll think all is well, I'll never tell
'Cause I can see it's very clear
That things aren't gonna change around here.

A kiss each day as I go on my way
Is sweet as all get out
"I love you." "I love you too."
Of that there is no doubt
But sometimes a man gets in a jam
And needs a little more
Despite your love it's not enough
So please don't lock the door

Oh, things aren't gonna change around here
And all I gotta do is say I'm going for a beer
You'll think all is well, I'll never tell
'Cause I can see it's very clear
That things aren't gonna change around here.

If it gets late you shouldn't wait
To go to bed when you are through
Get a good night's sleep sweet dreams to keep
There's no way you'll have a clue
I'll leave no trace, no lipstick face
No numbers you'll run across
It's a one-time thing, I'll wear my ring
That way it won't get lost.

Oh, things aren't gonna change around here
So all I gotta do is say I'm going for a beer
You'll think all is well, I'll never tell
'Cause I can see it's very clear
That things aren't gonna change around here.

Some thoughts:

Please, believe me, this is a joke! Thanks!

Hi John ~

I'm not typically a C&W fan, but I do believe you've just written a country-and-western hit 8) . Did you intend for that :D ? Very clear and it reads so easily, with all the right details to make your point very well. A rather sad "lives of quiet desperation" feeling to it. I wonder which star would give it the best treatment.

[Ah! Here comes Geoffrey  .]

Thank you Lizzay - While you hear correctly that it has a country style, I have to debate it being a "hit". It has a medium-speed sort of country thing going on. It's also notable as being only the second song I've ever written with the word "laid" in it. Not a phrase I find the use for very often, at least not in polite company!

Well, Leonard used it... so, you're following a good lead... as songwriting goes, it's rather benign :D .

I like the song, in any case. One of those that one has to wonder if it were to be found 'just lying around,' might it open some dialogue toward marital-apathy resolution.

You're welcome :D .

HEY! Don't take everything so literally... for example, George W. Bush didn't really call me a couple weeks back!

I'm not even going to go there with this one!

WHAT!?! DON'T burst my bubble!! Are you really saying that George W. Bush did NOT Call you, person-to-person, subsequent to wiretapping your phone!?! I'm crushed, John... I feel so betrayed, so deceived.

Now ~ As to a song/poem that one writes. You wrote it. You posted it. No lead-in. No footnotes. One must be prepared for the possibility of literal interpretations [consult with Geoffrey on this :) ]. Yes. This one was written by you. However, the song remains "One of those that... " ~ say, for instance, you weren't the songwriter. The nature of the song itself remains the same in terms of my inquiry.

Meanwhile, glad to know that all is well on your homefront :D .
