Leonard Signing 1500 copies
I ordered a copy for Dick (who is off-line in New Mexico) yesterday. There is nothing about the signed books on their site any more, and also nothing in the email confirmation. I sent them a reply that the order is valid only if it is a signed copy, and must be cancelled if it isn't. Haven't heard from them yet. Will post their answer here. -- This was my first-time order to Indigo, but they did not ask me to fax them a copy of my latest visa invoice and the face of credit card.
This is the e-mail I received from Indigo after I cancelled because I thought I was too late for a signed copy. Now they tell me I wasn't and there may be 1500. You figure--
Thank you for your e-mail regarding you Chapters-Indigo Order, OR14785415.
At this time Chapters Indigo does not have access to stop any cancellation requests.
Your order has now been successfully cancelled. And we apologize for any confusion and or problems this may have caused.
What I advise is that a new order be placed as soon as possible.
Our system indicates as of 03/27/06 our distribution center has currently sold approximately 1010 items. We are happy to
report that if your order is placed soon you would still be among the first 1,500 receiving a signed first edition copy.
However, we haven't received full details reporting that 1,500 customers will be receiving a signed first edition copy and not 1,000.
At this time with your new order being placed it would be in hopes that the number hasn't been reached.
If you require any additional assistance, please feel free to contact us.
Thank you for choosing Chapters Indigo Online. Books, Music, Movies and More.

I placed an order online about 13.30 GMT and, assuming the order references are sequential, then on Indigo's ordering system as a whole it's about 3,750 orders after yours, Jarkko. How many of those intervening orders are pre-orders for Book Of Longing and whether or not the fixed quota (whether 1000 or 1500) ended somewhere between the two is a total unknown.
Like life, this is a bit of a lottery. I'm willing to take my chances on a wing and a prayer and all that. I can always use the spare copy as a doorstop or give it to someone less interested as a stocking filler if I'm disappointed
. Disappointment in a game of chance has its own rewards for a melancholic bent on failure. Reassuring even.
Might it not be an idea to get Indigo to let someone here know when the guillotine has fallen and the quota's been filled or better still put a notice up on their own website? That way people can at least kick themselves before the event. Actually, having come to this news a little late (about a day after the story broke), I've already kicked myself about half a dozen times already before deciding to throw caution and fear of failure to the wind. The mental process goes something like this: "Bugger! I've missed the boat........mmm, no, maybe not?...should I? shouldn't I? should I? shouldn't I? She loves me? She loves me not? etc etc"
Book Of Longing: What an appropriate title for such an alluringly uncertain marketing event? Mind you, as a frequent chaser of tickets for gigs that sell out online in minutes, this all seems comparatively civilised and easier on the stress levels. There is at least hope and not too much of a whiff of behind the scenes "fixing" and New Year Sales syndrome in the air.

We have finally got more information about the Indigo offer. I'm copying Marie here.
We have now got confirmation that the number of copies that would be signed was raised to 1500. It is believed that there are still copies available now. The link to the book can be found at:

Since this was a private offer to those on Chapters' email list, there is no mention of it on their website. However, you will see mention of an event on May 13 in Toronto. It is expected that Leonard will attend this event and it will be open to the public. However, books WILL NOT be signed at this event.
