Ivor Cutler died. This unique singer/poet/humorist was 83 years old. I saw his perform many times, including as recently as 3 years ago. If any of you take the time to google him and listen to his songs it will reward you greatly. I am so glad I introduced my kids to his brilliant work.

there are some small samples, well many of his songs were little snippets anyway. you can find the famous "if your breasts" and "I got no common sense" and a new one to me called "trouble, trouble, ", but that is on a different link and I will find it again and post later, all I know is how precious it is to hear this wonderful man in his deep Glascow accent singing (something like) "why can't a man love a man, or a woman love a woman 'cos when a man loves a woman all you get is trouble, trouble, trouble".

I have heard the name 'Ivor Cutler' before, in conjunction with Billy Connolly, perhaps, but never heard any of his stuff. Just had a listen to a few of the samples on the links you provided. A couple I picked at random were very funny - "Cold Potato", which had something of the Spike Milligan about it, and "How to make a friend". I knew the latter was going to be funny when he started out with, "first of all take a large bucket of white wash". Great deadpan method of delivery, too. He has a very engaging voice. Strange how people can live and die without you ever having heard of them.

Thanks Michael, I've made a note of the TV prog time and will watch if I'm at home.

I sussed how to set the video and watched this morning. Well, nobody could accuse him of being tuneful! But what a wonderfully dour, funny, and eccentric man. 'Dour' and 'funny' are rather opposite qualities but he really did combine them. I love the way he focussed on the minutiae of life. The school he taught at, that wants to 'educate the whole person' must be a wonderful place for a child to attend. I sometimes bump into a local primary school teacher in the early mornings when he rides his bike in the hills, "to listen to the birds". The first thing he does every day with the kids is get out his guitar and sing to them. The world needs more people like that. It is sad that Mr Culter has died. He had honest eyes. Thanks for bringing him to our attention, Michael.

The poem, "Truth With a Pin", if that's the title, obviously requires him to be reading it to get the full impact, but I'd like the words anyway, but couldn't find them just now. I'll have another look later.
