Souad M. is awesome. That would be Raoui album that you have.
She has a gift of making each album sound quite different from the other.
Check out Mesk Elil her latest...
I've been to Jazzfest the past 3 years ...not quite sure about this year. We usually get a group of old college buddies to go....we'll see.
So Mr. Dylan has a heart after all...despite reports to the contrary.
December flavor

It seems I heard somewhere that a lot of bars aren't selling "H" drinks anymore. Folks who order them are likely to get an indulgent smile and a spit martini instead.
We're ALL superstitious, especially since "H" season begins again June 1.
Kush, Dylan has ties to New Orleans that go WAY back, to the early 60's, before anybody ever heard of Bob Dylan. He spent time here in his late teens, worked on the docks with the rough and tumble shrimpers in Morgan City, and lost his virginity to a stripper "outside of Della-croy" (Delacroix, LA.) Hence his romanticism of Highway 61 (ask Joe Way, he knows.) He's got lots of ties here, associates in the music biz with whom he's worked over the years. Some of them have also worked with Leonard. But I 'spose it would be too much to ask Leonard to sign on for Jazzfest, too, eh? You know, if LC's management is listening, it would be a GREAT idea. Leonard needs money, right? And Jazzfest-goers tend to go back home and BUY recordings by artists they've heard here...sooo...Leonard could be introduced to a whole new audience, no? Hey, he could perform "Jazz Police"
and then release it as a single.
Let's start a petition.

Haha.....the "H" incident was something!! The next day my stomach would churn everytime I saw somebody holding a red colored drink.
My favorite performers at the Jazzfest usually turn out to be lesser known ones though.....Eh la Bas, Marce Lacouture, Sonny Landreth, Vusi Mahlasela etc etc. Yes Jazzfest has introduced me to a host of new artists and even whole genre of mucsicians that I did not listen to before.

Sonny Landreth is playing again, first weekend this year. You'd also enjoy Snooks Eaglin, Kermit Ruffins, Walter "Wolfman" Washington, Anders Osborne, Eddie Bo, Irvin Mayfield's N.O. Jazz Orchestra. I'm lookin' forward to the Poor Clares, too, for a little bit 'o that gregorian chant.
Virtually all the locals lost their homes, many lost family members. Irvin Mayfield lost his father in the flood; the body wasn't identified for a couple of months. Mayfield's response was to compose a beautiful orchestral suite for the city which was performed at a cathedral. I wasn't able to attend, unfortunately, but I'm sure he'll probably perform it at the Fest.
If you prefer to go second weekend, check out Koko Taylor, Amanda Shaw, the New Orleans Klezmer Allstars, Marva Wright and Theresa Andersson, Frankie Ford, Ellis Marsalis. Anjelique Kidjo isn't local, but I LOVE her. Susan Cowsill (yes, of the formerly teeny-bop group) is doing some very different music these days, from what I've heard. She lost her brother Greg in Katrina's aftermath--unclear what happened. His body was found near the convention center.

Good luck Kush, otherwise - just a suggestion - let Lz go with your ol' buddies and do the doggy/kitty/parot/turtle/wathever/zoo/-sitter for her in Florida? (joke).
Squidgy, Bob Dylan never stop doing shows. This is not the case for Leonard Cohen. He may need a certain period to prepare himself doing it again.
I read on the net that Celine Dion will devote a night of her show "A New Day" to New Orleans. Good to see that she is not just a big mouth.
She is not the only one. So even if artists can not go there they participate in another way.
