I found this rather interesting, a blurb in Newsweek, read this morning while waiting for my car's oil to be changed:

"I realize it was very stupid of me. I will not do it again....I had obviously turned off the sound." ~ "Troud Helleland, a member of Norway's Parliament, apologizing for playing a war game on his pocket computer while the legislators around him debated the possibility of a real war with Iraq."

Having heard about some of the state-level sessions when I worked for a state legislator some years ago, I'm certain this a scene not unlikely to be seen in a D.C. session, as well.

My thought when I read it:
Testosterone-based, perhaps not-such-well-considered decision-making going on?

Take from it what you will.

elazar ~ I got your irony.
Andrew ~ the diaries of Ho Chi Minh sound intriguing and inspiring.
Kush and elazar ~ yes, yes, yes on the value of intelligent discourse and its power to change minds, hearts, and actions. I've experienced it from both sides, and never knowing the potential outcome, remain open to it always. Excellent and very graphic example with the Ku Klux Klan member/Judge transformation.

I'm not sure where it is now, the comment made about the Indians and its not necessarily being a bad thing that they were crushed by the early settlers in the Americas. Was it you who said that jurica? Whoever it was, I certainly disagree. There is so much wisdom and inherent respect for nature, the land, the spirit world, the knowledge of elders, and so many other things. If the settlers had come and simply learned to communicate, sat, talked, and listened, our country might have had a different temperament that would have brought a host of different kinds of benefits than the course we've taken. I have tremendous respect for the Native American Indians.

Flee for your lives!!! They're coming to attack the other 'hive'. Flee to the 'mother ship' before they spray you with seawater. Someone grab the earthlings' dictionary on the way out! K943, it is your mission to find out why they have what others call 'hysterical paranoia.' I am sure it has some significance. Flee, flee.........

Thanks for responding to this, Byron  ~ I had a number of possibilities cross my mind and decided to just bypass them all, including that likely eeey is not the only one who knows what you mean  [surprize!]. Of course, I think the fight-or-flight response has merit, too    ~ just don't want to be hoodwinked or outwinked  . Here's hoping ol' what's-his-number is on the job 8) .

Dear Eeey,
Your country (the United States of America) will soon achieve a swift, complete, comprehensive military victory against the dictator,Saddam.
The world's greatest imperial power (the United States of America), and the greatest "democracy" (the United States of America) will ensure a "regime change" and install an "interim government ", (the United States of America) in that sad land.
Victory is inevitable. "Pax Americana " rules O.K.
As a non-combatant, I wish I had your certitude that this, and only this, was justice.
Soon you will be raising a glass, yet again, to the American way of life.
Oh yes, I've told it to the marines, and, guess what?....they have told me too.
Enjoy your victory.
Andrew.

Following on from Andrew's observations and on a completely different thread which is not unconnected, I note that Hamed Khasai, the newly elected leader of the recently 'liberated' country of Afghanistan, is currently in Japan on a mission to gain money and material support for his fledgling government and 'democracy'.
One of the difficulties he is having to face on a daily basis, is that while he is 'Leader' and in control of Kabul, he has serious problems in the rest of his fragmented country.
He has no power whatsover in the rural areas, which makes up the vast majority of his country.
The men in charge of the rest of his country are in fact, and in deed, (literally) the old war lords who have controlled the country for years.
"How can this be?" I hear you ask.
"Simple" I reply. According to several press organizations in the U.S and Europe, these old style war lords are being paid vast sums of money by GuessWho?
Yep! You got it in one!!!
Democracy might 'be coming to the USA', but it sure as hell isn't coming to Afghanistan.
I am minded of a line from the Clint Eastwood film "The Outlaw Josey Wales" when one villain turns to another villain who is doublecrossing him, and says,
"Senator: There's a saying, Fletcher: To the victor belongs the spoils.
Fletcher: There's another saying, Senator: Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining. ".

here in brazil,in my neighborhood,as in the rest of the residential areas,
everyone has 7-10 foot walls surrounding from all sides.on top of those walls are electic fences.with full time watchmen, most.these people are obssesive about security.they must be experiancing "hysterical paranoia".
nebermind that kidnapping for ransom is almost a acknowledged form of business here.
these people are fostering hate for others, erecting a devisional boundery and not attempting to make peace with the gangster-of-the-day.actualy,they are preparing for an invasion from imperialist america.naturaly, the murderers and thieves all have numbered swiss accounts, courtesy of ~you guessed it, u.s.a.

as the marines and special op forces secretly comb sao paulo to find its weak points, and multiple entry and exit routes,we here are hoping they will kill us all, lest we fall into their hands.

elazar, I would hate to have to live in those conditions. A prisoner in your own country! We thought that we had problems here but nothing like yours. To give you an idea of how well we are watched over in the UK, we are not allowed to have fences over 6 feet high. We do not have such terrible kidnapping crimes. However, we do have the most closed circuit television cameras per head of population than any other country in the world. In my city, I can walk from my home to the far side of my city and be watched all the way by men in rooms who have banks of television screens in front of them. It stops a lot of criminals from committing crime in TV Camera areas, but the criminals go to areas where there are no cameras. Big Brother of 1984 is watching us all.

Errrm? would that be the Ordinary Original Piffle?
Or the Double-Size Piffle?
Or the Family-Size with extra-pee Piffle?
Or the pocket sized Snack-as-You-Go Piffle?
I do wish people would be more precise when ordering portions of Piffle.
But then again, I'm probably completely wrong, AGAIN!!

dear byron.

actualy,i feel quite safe and its very pleasant to live here.people are very warm and friendly.the security measures they take help, simular to the situation in england you descibed.

yet if you are not carefull,if you are lax in your attitude and think"nothing will ever happen to me"unfortunately there are the professional and petty criminal, both might single you out.so to let your guard down,i.e.be vulnerable,is something that you should not indulge in here.call it "street smart".

i am from minnesota were these things for me where not a concern.everyone is your friend.going to run around, play sports?leave your wallet and keys on the bench, you can bet they wil be there when you get back.but if i went to a nieghborhood i didnt know,i wasnt niave.

my point was america is being protrayed as the "hystericaly paranoid"when america is just being"streetsmart".i grew up in america and appreciate her as what she is.she has faults.but she is the best country in the world in my opinion.but im american, and naturaly therefor biased.i can live with that.

i have faith she will try deplomacy to the last available second.with out jeapordizing her citizens safety, and trying to please no one.perhaps then democracy will come to america."and they will beat their swords into plowshares and there spears into prune hooks...and nation will not raise sword unto nation, and they will study war no more."isaia.

to peace!to peace!
