It is difficult to 'really, really, listen' when your head is buzzing with all the thoughts and frustrations and activities of the day. Difficult to put all that aside, no matter how much you want to, and give your full attention to a child.
You come home from work, and you want rest; peace; calm; time to yourself, to just be YOU.

And that isn't what happens. Your wife needs you to help with the younger child so she can get a little peace - caring for a two-year-old all day is exceedingly demanding and exhausting - and your older son needs not only your help with his school work, but also your time to just be with him, to do nice things together.

It is hard to put yourself aside and be what everyone else needs you to be.
But a good parent has no choice.

I've been there, John. And I have an ex-son-in-law who has been bringing up 2 sons on his own since the youngest was 3. I have some idea how you feel.

Thank you very much for your own, kind words. I'm glad.
