The first note - how you found LC and how it affected you

Post by wilcotree »

For me last month or so someone popped in a video called "Natural Born Killers". "The Future" played during it. I endured the movie and then watched LC's name scroll next to a few songs. Mental note made. Went to the library a few weeks later and picked up "Joan Of Arc" by Mark Twain. Did a google search about Joan Of Arc and happened upon the LC's lyrics of the same name. Intrigue at the name. Leonard Cohen. Leonard Cohen. Leonard Cohen. Oh yeah, that movie, dig it. Searched for "cohen" and "lyrics" or some such arrangement(sp?). Wow. Found ya'll. Wow. Went to library. Most of it ripped off. Obtained some legal tender. Went to bookstore and used CD shop. Now i know why the internet was invented, at least for me anyway. Thank you, LC and Jarkko and the whole freaking world i guess too!

Don't be shy tell how it happened to you. If you have already done this in scattered threads C/C/P it then modify if you feel like it and then post it here again. All you lurkers come out!

When the streets are wet the colors slip into the sky! But i don't know why that means you and i are, that means you and i.

funny.. .it kinda went the same here

i saw Natural born killers like..2/3 years ago ? and i heard that soundtrack

i loved the song in the beginning... waiting for the miracle
but i didn't really know from who it was..
i was too stupid to look at the end.. at the credits..
so.. i just used the internet :) to search for the soundtrack from nbk
that's when i first saw his name "Leonard Cohen"
then i asked a friend of me on the university if he could found me some more songs from the guy.. he was like " from l. cohen... YEAH, i've got plenty of albums on my harddisk" :)
so.. i downloaded like.. 4/5 albums.. i loved it.. i immediatly thought he was a genius.. and i still think he is
after that i heard that he was going to release a new cd... Ten New Songs..
so.. i immediatly bought that cd in store.. and LOVED it..
it was my first cd... but definitely not the last one :)
after that i've just been buying all his cd's.. and i almost have them all now.. i need.. 4 more or so..

but.. that's still not the end.... after the studio stuff i was interested for some Live stuff from cohen... cause.. he aint really touring anymore
so i posted on this forum if someone had some Cohen bootlegs for me :)
i also looked on some trading sites.. and i found plenty of stuff.

but... most of the people were like "sure.. i can send you cd's.. but it's 15 dollar each.."
well.. i LOVE cohen.. but i'm not going to pay 15 dollar for a cd-r :)
hehe
1 person said "yeah, i'll send you some bootlegs.. just gimme yer address"
and she send me bootlegs.... i loved it... and the bootlegs... i thanked her... and said i loved the shows... heh.. after that she again sent me more bootlegs...
i think she's also a member here... so.. if yer reading this.... THANKS... i still enjoy them VERY much..

so.. Wilcotree.. my point... there's plenty of stuff from cohen that you just HAVE to hear :)
i dunno if you have some live stuff... but if you want some... just gimme yer address..
that person which sent them to me made me VERY happy with it... so. i guess it's my turn now to make other people happy... cause in my opinion.. that's what life's about !

Flash back to 1967...I went to a Chad Mitchell concert in Stevens Point, Wis.(Chad was an old folk singer more famous for contemporary political songs such as "The John Birch Society." He did this amazing song called "Suzanne" that I had to have and went out and bought his album called, "Love, A Feeling of..." Discovered that "Suzanne" was written by L. Cohen. At the same time, I saw an article in Time/Newsweek that mentioned new songwriters such as J. Mitchell and L. Cohen. Went out and bought the brand new, "Songs" by Leonard Cohen. (There is a picture of Leonard with Chad Mitchell along with Judy Collins, Joan Baez, Dave Von Ronk, and Mimi Farina taken about that time in Ira Nadel's "Various Positions").

In the interim, I saw him in concert in Madison, Wisconsin in October 1970. Discovered later that my future wife, Anne was there as well. We discovered our mutual respect for Leonard about the same time as we discovered our mutual love for each other. We've looked forward to every Leonard release and have a lot of his poetry books as well.

Psychofishy, so your really saying you'll mail me something of LC clear from Holland? That would be most pleasant.

Somebody downtown gave me a CDR with "Please, Don't Pass Me By" and "Joan Of Arc" (not live) on it. It's the only "live thing" i have by LC. It cracked my heart and all this beauty came flooding out. There is really no word i can say about it or i get all teared up. An emoticon really completely fails to express the emotion i felt and still feel when i let it feel. Guess i'll shut up now.

Meeting Leonard

Post by Robert »

It was 1970, I was in Vietnam, in a little place not too far from the coastal town of Vung Tau, called Long Thanh. I had purchased an Akai reel to reel tape deck and went to a post exchange on another army base and found a recording called, "Songs from a Room" on a 7 inch reel (remember those?). I had remebered the name from the Judy Collins Wildflowers album, so I took a chance. I listened to this brilliant madman with a flair for poetry and the ability to use words that surely were never intended to be used in songs. These songs resonated with me, with my spirit, and I brought him home with me, though for the longest time I thought I was the only one in the world who was as taken with his artistry as I. I see that I have many kindred all over the world.
I have converted my wife into the cause, though really the credit goes to LC. All three of our children (27, 17, and 15) think he is "awesome" as well. He spoke to me then as he does today. Thanks, Leonard.

About his music.

Post by TomyBoy »

My mom use to play Mr Cohens music when I was kid.
I forget his music while I grow up. One Saturday morning I was walking in Helsinki and rain start falling. So I went some bar because of rain. There was some weird one funny DJ who played Mr Cohens I’m your man. It infects me so deep. I start remembering things from my childhood. Sunny days with my parents and beautiful things like that. I went strictly to a record shop and introduced myself to Mr Cohens music.

His songs effect me a lot. I start to write poetries and songs because of Mr Cohen.
His words help me to heal my hurts. I adore His music and poetry. I can’t imagine my life without his music.
Everyday L.C. shows my way.

Dear TomyBoy ~

Sometimes English usage by non-native English speakers captures heartfelt expression more graphically and innocently than that of people who have spoken it their entire lives. I enjoyed reading your route to Leonard, and the role he continues to play in your life.

Welcome to the Forum.

I'm the only person I know who read the poetry before I listened to the music!
My mother used to listen to The Future over and over and over at top volume while she was in the bath, so when a teacher of mine mentioned that he loved Leonard Cohen, I dismissed him entirely, until he leant me Stranger Music. I've never said, 'Yes! Exactly!!' to myself so many times while reading poetry before, it was amazing. I've been hooked since then.

time to come clean.

two years ago about,my friend tried to convert me to cohenism.he was so insistant and forcefull.i resisted on the premiss of "who is l.c?"which was just a weak excuse not to become indocternated in the apperant religion.

so he burned a cd of all his favorite cohen tunes and gave it to me.i took it and filed it away.daily he asked me "so what daya think?"i evaded.stubbornly.

so finaly on a dreary day i listen to l.c.i was stupified.
next day i run over to friend and sing praise to l.c.
he was obviously hurt by my former rejection of l.c. and demanded in all seriousness that i return him the cd.i thought he was kidding.he wasnt.
so in spite i forgot l.c. it was all a dream anyway.

so i was l.c.less untill jan 2002 when i was hospitalized.i asked my sister to get me a l.c. cd immediately.she got be the best of cd.i only have that cd.i lend it out and prosletise l.c. to all.everytime i listen to it its like the first time.havent absorbed it yet and may be overwelmed if i get more l.c.
when i hear a halleluja or other tunes that arent on best of its a special occasion.maybe this is foolish.

my dad is a cohenhead.he tried to go to mt.baldy when he lived in l.a. for a time.he wasnt admitted.
my brother in law is a cohenhead and a cancer surviver.

Great story, elazar. So, many of these song discussions escape you! Wow.....do thyself a favour....don't have to tell you what it is. Are Cohen tapes/cd's difficult to find or prohibitively expensive in Sao Paulo?

Hmm. I like that. This is number 1122 posting. Instead of 1111, which I missed altogether, it's 11 and 11 doubled. Something about number patterns really intrigues me.

I was in a public library sometime in the seventies, thumbing through some random songbooks, and there I found the words to Suzanne. One line didn't leave my mind for quite a while: "There are heroes in the sea-weed."
So the next time I tried to get hold of more words, and I attempted to get his records to listen to, which wasn't all that easy.
Since then I am on and off listening to Cohen. Not that I don't care for him in the "off times", but it is a bit like Shakespeare: I consider Shakespeare one of the greatest playwrights ever, but that doesn't mean I'm reading his plays all the time, or spend all my days looking at them.
So I always consider LC one of the great Poets and songwriters, but do not look at or listen to his work all the time. But now and again, one of the many beautiful and expressive lines comes to my mind again, and then I start working myself through all his recordings and the part of his poetry that is available to me.
Lately a line from "The Future" kept reverberating in my mind ("Get ready for the Future, it is murder"), whenever I heard news about the at that time upcoming war, and that drove me to this forum, where I immediately felt at home.
Thanks to Leonard, and to all of you.

Tom
