It may not be of much interest to most of you, at least not for now, but if ever the movie "L'audition" (The Audition) comes to your area, at a film fest or to your video club, make sure to see it. You'll be treated with Halleluja by Leonard Cohen himself. The song comes in at a key moment of the movie, in a crescendo that is very touching. It even seems to interfere with the action on screen and you understand exactly why only at the end.
It's a movie by director and actor Luc Picard. I believe it has come out only in french for now. And it takes place in Montreal.

Atom Egoyan used the original version of 'Everybody knows" in his movie "Exotica". But that was in 1994. Not sure if it qualifies to state that canadian film directors may be more inclined to use the original golden voice of the man himself. In Exotica the song stood out strikingly, almost as a caracter of it's own in the film.
I did not find any mention of "Exotica" here in the threads, with the search option. I cannot imagine that it's never been discused here. Anyways, another must see for any Cohen fan. That movie was quite big in it's time. It won the Critic's prize at Cannes that year.

Simon, I hava VC copy of this film, which is one of my favourites! From memory, our national SBS TV channel (which, amongst other things, promotes multi-cultural themes and meritorious international films) has shown it a couple of times and I recall that their Movie Show reviewers (in 1995 or 1996) made it their pick of all the movies they reviewed that particular year!

Synopsis of "The Audition"
“The Audition” is the story of Louis, a collector guy for loan sharks , a bone braker. His job is to scare people. Louis has always secretly dreamed of becoming an actor and one day he is offered the opportunity to audition for a major director. His life is at a turning point. Hard to say more without spoilling it. Luc Picard, as Louis, reminded me at times of Al Pacino in Donnie Brasco.
The movie won Grand Prize at the new Festival de Films de Montréal last september, where it was presented with english subtitles. A movie about dreams, love, childhood. Touching but humoristic at times, the viewer is in for heart braking surprises.
The soundtrack is mostly by Daniel Bélanger, well known musician/ singer/song-writer in Québec, but Leonard Cohen also comes in, with Halleluja, as an unexpected but pleasant surprise.

ey! - With the fight of the two film festivals right now (and according that I had never paid attention to the first one all those years - as I am not very found about films) AND the big boum around childhood that is happening in the same time (I'm fed up), this film was not appealing to me, although I'm very found of Luc Picard.
