Top 2 is without any doubt, after that it becomes foggy .

Even a top2 would be hard for me, the faves change daily sometimes. Buckley's Hallelujuah has to be up there (for me) always (and I just found it!!). Also, the Bird on the Wire from Cohen Live. After that, it could be any combo on any given day.

Linda.

How could I forget "If It Be Your Will"? That's a keeper. Also, Light as the Breeze. And, of course, Who By Fire. I better stop now.

what is the point of all this? really, I mean, don't you people have a life? I can understand a forum for actual discussion. But the level of banality here is pathetic. It's unfortunate that this site is associated with the profundity of Leonard Cohen. And some pathetic people will respond to what I've just written with a self-righteous, self-defensive air that will only illustrate my point further. I highly recommed that everyone just cool it for a while. Go read a book, meet people. Do something other than exchange inane commentary, not even commentary; more like the spattering and clucking of, well, the mindless.

Hi Hal,

Uh, the self-righteous, self-defensive and pathetic would be me, right? Because I'm responding to your post?

Well, I agree that LC is indeed a writer of deep profundity and there have been many terrific discussions in this forum on every aspect of his career. But must we be so serious all the time? I'm sure we all read, meet people, etc. but there are times, when a little levity goes a long way. My head aches and the bills are due, I don't think a little schmoozing on the lighter topics is a matter of concern. If it were the board's only pass-time, I'd have to agree, but there are many insightful threads going. BL is a good one. For those that want some insight into that somewhat difficult book, it's a good thread.

I could name others, but you can see for yourself. This thread concerns his songs. What's wrong with posting and being reminded of a great LC tune that one hasn't heard in a while?

I'm interested in your response.

Linda.

PS: In this thread you can see that most of the people are relatively new to the board. They're meeting people and at least talking about their favourite LC songs. Maybe, in that process, they're turning someone else on to a song they didnt know of previously. I can't see the harm.

I have no live, no friends I don't need them there is this forum.
I cry day and night paining for the day
I might get a glimpse of Leonard Cohen,
Then I can die knowing my life had meaning.
I named my kitten Leonrdcohen so I could channel His energy.
I name all my plants Leonardcohen for the same reason.
Every breath I take I can't help but wonder
Has this air passed through his lungs?
I wake up each day 8 AM LA time thinking
This is the time that He wakes up.
I will eat brisket every Friday now
Where can I get a lentil soup recipe?
I became a Buddhist only because
This is what He did and it will help me to be closer to Him.
My every thought is of Leonard Cohen.
Would He like me in this dress?
I was born to be a slave to every word
He ever sang spoke and wrote.
When in New York I stay at the Chelsea Hotel.
I will die the same day he does to join him in the Bardo.
If this forum was to dissappear I would have a
NEVOUS BREAKDOWN
you are the only people I can relate to you almost understand my passion.
Touch me Leonard, take me leonard
I LOVE YOU, COULD YOU DO YOU LOVE ME, I NEED TO KNOW
 :)

Dear Linda,

I was drunk and in a particularly vindictive mood. But does it not concern you how emotional an anonymous medium can be? Who’s to say we're not all putting each other on? There is no real point to this forum other than as a kind of superficial outlet for those who love, to the point of creating a mythological, Leonard Cohen. I think there is much to be pathologized here.

Hal,

Drunken, vindictive posting, eh? :D - well, you're not the first, and you won't be the last.

Yes, it's odd how emotionally involved we all become, most of us not knowing one another at all. Certainly not knowing Leonard except for his art.

I doubt that these things happen on a 'Beethoven' site, as he's dead. But, we agree that his work is brilliant. Why is it different here? It's not as though Leonard drops by to see how we're doing. Yet, we come and 'commemorate' a living artist. And wind up killing one another, figuratively speaking. Good thing we're not in an auditorium, the 'figurative' just may become 'literal'.

Still, I think this site has much to offer for those that do love his work, and for those that want to learn more. Much of his (and others) work is shared thru the main site and various links and recommendations. But, yes, for an anonymous medium, it sure becomes personal for some, with Leonard achieving almost demi-god status. Same goes for sports heroes, actors, etc., we don't know them personally so we have no bones to pick with them. Just each other.

This is really the first medium that can reach so many people at once, with many people interacting with no common ground but Leonard. So, there is bound to be 'disturbances'. Yet, here we are, both you and I and the others, talking about it, and we'll be back. That can't be all bad. In fact, I'm sure much good has come of it.

Linda.

I rather enjoyed hal's first post - it made me laugh. And, frankly, it 'sounded' a bit like me in my more impatient, moody moments. But I've gotta hand it to linda - you simply can't argue with her response, because it's eminently reasonable and good-natured. I might even come up with a top 10 soon to get into the spirit of things. Oh, and hal? Maybe you could expound your views on the relationship between songwriting and poetry, as raised elsewhere. No lists - I promise.

You took the words right out of my mouth Linda. What I find remarkable about Leonard Cohen is that he has shared through his work his heart, maybe this is what I think touches us. When I see him in interviews he strikes me as the kind of person that I would feel comfortable talking too after the initial shock. He appears to be humble despite his ability to float through the air.

It's the lopsided smile that does it. And the wry, gentle tone of his speaking voice. And the odd way he carries his body when he is singing. And the way he shuts his eyes to sing, as though he is inside the song and unaware of the audience... though you know quite well he IS aware, when he adjusts the microphone...
He's a man you can't help your heart responding to with amused affection and compassion... you want to hug him and 'make him better' - like a mother with a child who has fallen over and hurt itself...
Only just found this video of LC:

This one does make me cry.

Tri-me  ~ I believe you got his waking time wrong. Set your clock at least 2 hours earlier  .

Hal ~ Stick around and add more to your four posts, and you'll soon be finding many more advantages to this site than you've imagined. Some threads are bound to strike everyone ~ each his own ~ as, "What!?!" ~ however, in the end, we generally all come together at one or another point, and are glad we did. Hope you weren't painfully hung over. What a drag.

Also Hal, if you don't like the threads you see, you can open your own. Whatever topic you might want to discuss is available to you. Just open your own thread, and you can speak about whatever you wish.
