Leonard is bigger than money
At the risk of repeating myself, I find I must press on.
This thread was founded on one basic premise - that the participants of this forum took too much notice of Leonard Cohen's financial affairs. I still believe this. The complexities of money were bound to spring up. I realise I'm 'pushing shit up hill' to have anyone recognise the fact that in the end we may not need any money at all. But that is my belief - I hope one day it will become a reality. How? How did we land on the moon, develop the internet or enjoy Charlie Chaplin at the 'flickers' (please don't concentrate on the money part, think of the thought processes)? Things evolve. Ideas change. We embrace new methods. The almighty dollar may reign supreme in 2005, but what about 2010 or 2080? Where will it be? My hope is that it's gone to hell. That lists like the 'world's hundred richest' will become redundant. That sharing will be prevalent; the weak to be emboldened, the smug cut down...
Will we see it in our generation? I'm not sure. But the Dylans, Cohens and Morrisons of this world have been 'layin' it down' for forty or more years. They have hope and that's good enough for me.

"had to grab for water."
Do they want to boil the missionary?
A tribe of cannibals is preparing to eat a missionary, but they want to prove him a last time that they care for human dignity and respect, they allow him to do a short declaration, if it is true, he will be rost, if it is false, he will be boiled. What do the missionnary have to say to save his life?

So interesting, all this money talk... interesting enough to make me log in and give my .02, instead of just reading the goings on in Cohen world. We (the general population of earth) strive and strive and strive all through life for money. The way society is set up, money is necessary to meet basic needs.. which is fine and dandy (and come to think of it, just as interesting, whoever decided way back when, that gold itself is worth something?) - but then it's taken to the extreme.. some have more money than they'll ever ever ever need in 10 life times, some are buying diamond studded undies and brassieres, while at the same exact time, countless others die of starvation and thirst every single day. What is that all about? The way I see it is, none of us can take 5 cents with us when we die, not even the Donald Trumps of the world, same as the poorest and sickest beggar in any third world country... we will all step out with what we came with, no matter how much money we did or didn't acquire in life. All any of us can take with us (if indeed there is some "place" to take something) is how we've lived our lives, and so we'd best pay attention to that, first and foremost. How many of us are going to lament on our death beds.. "Gee, I wish I'd gone to the office a lot more so I'd have more money right now."

Well I dont care much for ostentation or acquisition for its own sake either - but what how do you define basic needs? It is different for every person.
So for some diamond studded brassieres etc may be an unnecessary luxury - to someone else (say a poor third worlder barely making 3 meals a day) buying Leonard Cohen CDs (or for that matter any CDs) or making transatlantic vacations for Leonard Cohen gatherings in exotic islands is an unnecessary luxury. But of course we are still gonna do all these things for we can afford it and Leonard Cohen is a passion. So when for example Jay Leno acquires a collection of vintage and other exotic cars (becoz' cars are his passion and he can afford it) I say more power to him. We should all be free to make as much money as we care for and work for and to be able to live (and give) according to our own standards if we have the opportunity to do so. Not everyone in the world gets that opportunity. As Moms usually say to kids....."finish all the food in your plate coz' a lot of kids go hungry." (well atleast my Mom used to)
p.s. And many of those third world countries are getting rich coz' everybody wants to be affluent and assertive and not remain poor and spiritual. I believe there are more Mercedez going around in Shanghai (where they share the work, share the food, share the Mercedez - to borrow Linda's phrase) than in NYC.
Poor man wanna be rich
Rich man wanna be king
King ain't satisfied till he rules everything
I wanna go out tonite
I wanna find out what I got - The Boss

Oh can't you know
Of the purple sky
and rainbow
Of the peace
over the lake
at midnight
Can't you imagine
17 year old bombers
Echoless streets
Without water
Ecclesiastes weeping
at the end
That the end is now
But you can't see
Through your wet leather
blindfold
Your Sampson
burnt out eyes
For one is born
then one to die
Penniless all along
And Bobbie has
her sights cleared
by compassion
And in all this musing
where is Gandhi
Courage and conviction
Seeing thru' the layers
Seeing thru' the layers
to the truth
Of the purple sky
and rainbow
Of the peace
over the lake
at midnight
Can't you imagine
