This is so an excellent idea!!!!!!!!!!!

Ask and answer questions about Leonard Cohen, his work, this forum and the websites!

Do you think Leonard should include an offering from a forum member on his new CD

Yes! I can't think why he has already thought of it.

This is almost as good an idea as any other idea I have had

Leonard is presently compiling a new CD who apart from me thinks it would be a good idea if he authorised a competition for a song from one of the forum to be included in this CD.

Hands up all those who think it is a good idea!

Paula,

Do you mean some lyrics? Or lyrics plus music? I voted Yes! :)

Hey, hey, Paula!

Me, somewhat a cynic and a poster of some kind of, uh, weird compulsion, voted for the 'have you seen the penmanship in this place'. I don't know if i should be revealing my vote at this stage, but my own guilt must be killing me, otherwise I wouldn't have felt the need to unburden myself.

Well, here's hoping some other lucky ducky makes the grade!

Cheers,
Linda.

I am not smart enough to find out how to vote, but if I were, I would vote no. But not for bad quality of forum members´works, they are fine. I just think that it isn´t good selection criterion - the membership anywhere. It should be opposite process, I think. If LC randomly read some lines which would catch him and he would decided to use it. I am sure there must be some relation to the poem, to the author or both.
Maybe somee a little different project could be useful for unknown poets and songwriters to get a chance...

I voted "no" but I quote my fellow forum member Bruna : "not for bad quality", which said quality, bad or good, I leave to people skilled in the art to judge.

So this is because I feel like being sit in a concert room and suddenly the securitypeople have to put off the stage some hot head fans.

Though I'm not Leonard Cohen, am I? No. Certainly not. He may think to this an excellent idea.

Ah!

Ah.

Ah.... hum.... There, I propose some titles : Poetry by the fans of Leonard Cohen. Flowers of Leonard Cohen. Spice Box of Beautiful Losers.

bruna, I really wish you would stop saying things like that about yourself (the first part I mean), as you went on to articulate your feelings very well. If you find yourself in need of voting, just push the button beside the comment you agree with.

However, as i said, you've already told us, in a very articulate way, how you feel, so if you don't really want to vote, don't.

Linda,I am afraid it is misunderstanding.
I merely haven´t found the button to click to vote :D
So I wanted to vote and I would do it, if I found the f....g button.

By the way your atavar is very very nice...

Tchocolatl,
I understand your smile, it was really naive from me , but I understand all the people, who are trying so bad to create anything beautiful... I am sure that it is terrible mistake of this world, that all natural things are disconnected. I mean when the world wasn´t global, when regions lived their separate lives, there were not such strict quality requirements. Musicians used to play for village people to dance... And some were better, some were worse... It seems so nice to me. So many people just hunt for money, and thanks to God, that there are still numbers of fools, who live for the Beauty...
For me even foolish poet is better than none one.
When I saw stupidity of some managers, who have power, money and respect, I often think to myself- boys you should try to write stupid poems, it would be better for us...

It is aways a treat to be challenged as a writer. My attempt at poetry was dismal and a song could be a disaster.

It would be interesting to see what writers on the forum would write. You never know a song could be good enough, there are many talented writers in the forum, you never know unless you try.

Can't figure out how to vote.

What Bruni? First I can not imagine that you could be more naive than I am. But everything is possible. Second, my smile in this thread is friendly. Your idea is great.

Linda, no-no : I really meant "of" not "for", this time it was not another one of my numerous usual lapsus, 'cause I heard (was it a urban legend?) about the title being "Flowers of Hitler" - which I translated automatically by "Les fleurs du mal", of course, in the tiny bizarre little garden I cultivate with great care - at the beginning and it was changed for "for" (forfor, pfff... ey what a sound) by the bookmaker (or do you say editor?).

Hi Tchoco,

OK. Gotcha on the of/for regarding LC and Hitler (as well as some flowers).

I think 'publisher' would be the best term, although editor would do as well. but only after there is a publisher. Bookmaker, on the other hand, does not make books (real books). Bookmakers take off track bets on horse races, well bets of just about any kind. It's illegal here, but I think the Brits have 'betting shops'. Not much different than going to the 7-11 and buying a handful of 'scratch and wins' or Lotto 6/49 tickets, I guess.

I think Leonard Cohen should make an album with only my lyrics. This would be a modest hommage from him to me, cause I think he was influenced by my song "creation" when he wrote "So long Marianne". I never really got the credit I deserved for helping him to make that huge hitsong.

Sorry to interrupt, but Flowers for Hitler isn't the title to beconsidered at all. It has some political and ideological connotations which were consciously used by Leonard when he titled the book so. And it has allusion to Fleurs du Mal as Tchoco said. It is used even now: one Croatian newspaper, radical-leftist's, recently put on it's cover page (which announced the text about resurrection of Neonacism in Croatia) with title Flowers for Pavelic. You must know that Pavelic was leader of Croatian Nazi regime 1941-45, Hitler's vassal.

I surely don't wanna any such Flowers!

It is the book about evil. "Flowers for Hitler" means exactly that.

Interesting fact is that this was conscious Cohen-reference: the editor of that newspaper was Croatian publisher of Beautiful Losers! (Yes, yes: Beautiful Losers were published in series specialised for anarchists, beatniks, cult writers, leftist, radicals in theory and literature... Ferlinghetti, Patti Smith, Jim Morisson, Danilo Kis, Slavenka Drakulic, Leonard Cohen, John Fante, Raymond Carver, Odon von Horvath, Paul Auster, and many left-wing radical theories...)

Tom,

Thank you for the back-ground info. As usual, you are a veritable well-spring of interesting facts.

Peter:

I agree with you 100%. Leonard paying a small hommage to you seems appropriate. After all, wasn't he at your conception? (in a figurative way)? Or am I thinking of someone else? No matter. I think LC will find it to be an excellent idea as well. wouldn't it be something if this actually came to be...?
