Hello, KRTEK,

the meaning of life is very gloomy subject, isn't it... i mean, it wouldn't be if you could get a satisfactory ansver, but you will not. ever.

have you seen The Meaning of Life by Monty Python? one of my favorite movies, i must say.

i could also invite you to read my favorite gloomy poem. it was written by 19th century italian poet Giacomo Leopardi, whose father made him study so hard that his body went to ruins, and as he was very ugly, he couldn't have any women, although he travelled far and wide for love. they say that he compensated his sexual misfortune in writtings, which are, by my humble opinion, the highest peek of italian romanticisam. it is said that he met his death as a liberation from pain, with a smile...

To himself

Now will you rest forever,
My tired heart. Dead is the last deception,
That I thought eternal. Dead. Well I feel
In us the sweet illusions,
Nothing but ash, desire burned out.
Rest forever. You have
Trembled enough. Nothing is worth
Thy beats, nor does the earth deserve

...i do not know why this poem is titled To himself in English, and To myself in Croatian, and i can't speak Italian to know which one is right, but it doesn't realy matter.

life seems meaningful enough after reading Leopardi, doesn't it? yeah, ti does the same thing to me when i'm down.

wow i was sure i could out-gloom anyone but now i realize im a real ametuer! krtek,there is beauty,love,goodness,and more beauty in this here life! i also love to see her naked over there especialy from the back,and when i do,my longing is taken from my tongue.

a pessimist was once asked "whats the difference between a optimist and a pessimist?"
the pessimist answered " a pessimist will say 'it cant get any worse'
an optimist would say 'it can get a lot worst!'"

and so like jurica says there is no answer,but i would add that one cannot provide another with a meaning for life,each one has his own personal meaning.

The writer, Frances Stillman, wrote in her seminal work "The Poet's Manual...."(1966) "Try to write about the meaning of life, and you will run up against a brick wall. Describe a brick wall accurately, and you may, incidently,say something about the meaning of life".
I've tried to follow this excellent advice, as have other writers I know.
Stillman's book has undergone many reprints, and I would thoroughly recommend it to board members, especially those who would like to write poetry.

On "meaning" and "meaning of life", I thought a couple of LC's lines/lyrics are worth contemplating - partly because they seem to highlight the mysterious and perhaps inscrutable nature of the topic!

1) From 'Beautiful Losers': '...everything which has existed and does exist, we are part of a necklace of incomparable beauty and unmeaning."

(If you can locate a copy of the "In Short: Leonard Cohen" video, you will hear him recite a significant excerpt that includes these lines and is recorded with a visual backdrop of evocative constantly changing black and white photos, creating a collage sort of effect. It's just brilliant - one of my favourite LC items.)

2) From 'Boogie Street' (Ten New Songs):
"Though all the maps of blood and flesh
Are posted on the door,
There's no one who has told us yet
What Boogie Street is for."
