Martha Wainwright about L. Cohen

Post by tomsakic »

It's time that Martha get's her own thread - she doesn't need to be in her borther's shadow as she used to be
While Rufus found escape in opera and classical music, his sister discovered Cyndi Lauper, Prince and, when she was 13, I'm Your Man by Leonard Cohen. "It's completely dated now because he uses a crappy synthesizer, but I'm Your Man was a revelation because it was clear that the words are more important than the music. When everyone at school was listening to pop radio, I had this album on tape, but I wouldn't dare tell my friends that it was my favourite because they would be like: 'Euuw.' This is where it all started for me."

Thank you, Tom,

I heartily agree that Martha deserves her own thread. I got tired of wading through all that Rufus stuff trying to find some info on Martha. It's the middle of the night here and I'm off the bed (again). Just wanted to thank you for opening this thread. When I wake up, I sure hope there's more in it!

Tom I was watching canadian Kurt Browning skate to "Im Your Man" and I remember being frantic and calling friends to hurry and turn to channel 7.
That was the song that drew me into Leondard Cohen's work.

Well, it seems that it did that with many, like Tom Waits 8) (He recently listed I'm Your Man on his list of favourite albums:-) I am much younger, one of those fans who got involved with LC during his monastery years, so Ten New Songs was the first album I wtached coming out in real time. But I know many people who were between 17, 18 and 25 in late 80s and I'm Your Man was one of important thing for them.

Btw, Martha's debut album Martha Wainwright is released few days ago in Europe (USA in few days). I hope I'll put my hands on it very soon.

Can't wait for your take on Martha's new one. That is going to be a for sure for me. I might have to send away for it, but it will be worht it. I just know that woman is going places! So much talent in Canada now. Oh, Feist won the 'most promising' or 'best up and coming' - whatever they call it prize at the Juno's. Usually, the best new artist award is a death knell. In her case, I hope not.

Nice picture of her here, and complete info including her OWS.

Martha's concert was fantastic last night.

She declared Leonard Cohen to be the best living song writer and then went on to do a spine-tingling version of Tower Of Song.
