Come spend the morning

Post by jarkko »

COME SPEND THE MORNING
performed by LEE HAZLEWOOD on 'Poet, fool or bum' (USA 1973)
and
by ENGELBERT HUMPERDINCK on 'Don't You Love Me Anymore' (USA 1981)

This song written by Leonard with Bob Johnston has now been re-discovered (thanks to José Antonio Torres Almodóvar who found
Lee Hazlewood's version and Anne Riise who introduced us to Engelbert Humberdincks rendition)

This is from http://web.inter.nl.net/users/wilkens/Lh06.html:
Also in 1973 but in the US he cut the album 'Poet, fool or bum' for the Capitol label. This brilliant album was made by Amos Productions and consists partly of cover versions. This album has different covers for either the US and UK issue and shows Lee without a mustache, which could have been called one of his trademarks. One could think he looked like Leonard Cohen whose song 'Come spend the morning' he included on the album. The album even received a one-word verdict 'Bum' in UK's New Musical Express. The production was in the hands of Jimmy Bowen.
Engelbert's record is listed on the following page:

It would be great to post the lyrics, too. Help in this would be appreciated. I have Hazlewood's song in MP3 and will be happy to forward to a member who is willing to transcribe the lyrics.

I'd give it a try, Jarkko. I think Paula must be 'transcibed out' by now.

Here are the lyrics - thanks to linda_lakeside for the transcription.
I will post them shortly also on the main site.
The song is credited to Leonard and Bob Johnston.

COME SPEND THE MORNING

Long legged, dusty-eyed, satisfied woman,
Come spend the morning with me.

We took the night
As it came to us
Both of us hungry and free
Long legged, dusty-eyed, satisfied woman,
Come spend the morning with me.

Go tell the saints on their crosses
Go tell all the brave, young
Captains at war
To come back and find them such a peaceful morning
Then they'll go killing no more.

Come spend the morning,
Come spend the morning,
Come spend the morning with me.

Wake up my lady
The darkness is gone
Once again, I guess we're both free
Ah you, long legged, open-eyed, satisfied woman,
Come on, spend the morning, Spend the morning with me.

---

Note: we don't have original written lyrics, but all who have
listened to the song really hear Lee Hazlewood singing
dusty-eye and not dusky-eyed!!!

In 1997, Mark Barker attended a songwriter show in Nashville where Bob Johnston performed "Come Spend the Morning with Me". These are the lyrics Barker lated posted on Usenet; as you'll see, there are differences from the Hazlewood version -- notably the second lines of the first and last verses, and "peaceable" instead of "peaceful":

We took the night as it came to us
And it came like the tides from the sea
Long legged, dusty-eyed, satisfied woman
Come spend the morning with me

Go tell the saints on their crosses
Go tell all the brave young captains at war
To come back and find them such a peaceable morning
And then they'll go killin' no more

Wake up my lady, the darkness is gone
And whatever will be, let it be
Long legged, open-eyed, satisfied woman
Please come spend the morning with me

In the live recording from Stockholm 1974, Hazlewood sings the same lyrics as on Poet, Fool or Bum.

By the way, does anybody have the Humperdinck recording? I've only listened to an excerpt, and it sounds like he uses the lyrics quoted above!

Sensual, sensuous song ~ an apropos, anti-war anthem.

This is the first I've seen this thread. Thanks to Jarkko, Linda, Mark, and Kjelling for both renditions.
