La beauté obscure du cœur, Leonard Cohen

The obscure beauty of the heart. It could have been The thin gypsy thief, as well.

I did not learn many news. He is born on Friday (?)

Adam talked about The Book of Longing, just being finished. He said that Leonard Cohen is fine. That he is in an energy of working working working, from morning to night (Thanks G_d!!!). He is not feverish, though, but absorded. That he is sharing his time equally between Montréal, Los Angeles and India. That he is working on a CD for somebody else, and on some other songs.

And yes, yes, Ladies and Gentlemen, Adam said he loves and admires his dad, and that he is even, sometimes, a fan.

He said that he benefits from his dad experience buUut... he talked a little of what he is as another singer, I'm different, he said, he said that he has not his talent, therefore, he finishes his songs faster than him. Familiar sense of humour... hum...

A moment I liked was this, related by Michel Garneau :

Leonard Cohen is at Michel Garneau’s house, they discuss all the evening, have opposite opinions. At the end of the evening, Cohen leaves and says “I like you very much but you’re wrong”. Cohen goes. Garnau is feeling a little... you know... this “you’re wrong”... Then he hears a gentle knock at the door, it’s Cohen. He is holding a little medal and he says “it is a Hindu godess. Keep it, she’ll protect you”. Garneau said he is a sceptic but he has the medal on his desk since that day.

Leonard Cohen is a living poem.

Well, it was a good little hour.

merçi de nous avoir pointé dans la direction de cette émission..

je suis très gêné, cependant, d'admettre qu'auparavant je n'avais jamais entendu ni les poèmes ni les chansons de leonard récités en français..

ça doit sûrement être pourquoi j'ai été tellement captivé par l'émission..on dirait que c'était comme une deuxième introduction au monde de leonard..et comme ca m'a plue!

Muddy, hum... I do not know, now, in which language I should answer, in French or in English (OK, OK funny guys, I hear you in the background saying that I never write in English anyway... - or maybe this is all in my imagination? And in reality I am much too drab to worth a joke? Sight....) as it is an anglophone forum only.

Lets play the game of the simultaneous translation.

A voice : Je suis contente (another voice : I'm happy) de savoir (to know) que tu as passé un bon moment (that you enjoyed yourself).

Moi aussi je trouve que le fait de passer d'une langue à l'autre jette un éclairage très captivant sur les poèmes

P.S. : Muddy Water is the name of a musician I appreciate a lot!

..yes, i rather hesitantly wrote you in french, not wishing to exclude those who would not be able to read it. but it is so seldom that i have the opportunity to exercise the other half of my tongue (!), that i simply had to indulge just this once..

i was simply thanking tchocolatl for having pointed me in the direction of this particular program..i hadn't heard about it, and probably wouldn't have if i hadn't stumbled across her post..

anyhow, it was lovely to "hear leonard" in a different language..i think michel garneau (the man who translates leonard's poetry to french) does a wonderful job of capturing the message and mystery of leonard's work..

thanks again to tchocolatl, and please do forgive my having originally indulged without sharing..i suppose i was caught up in the excitement..

It seems like nice programme from your description. "Une heure sur l'oeuvre de Léonard Cohen" unfortunately isn't a link; it oviously isn't available online.

La force de l'habitude Muddy!

We are so used to "French/English" or "English/French" here! Moi, j'ai bien compris et aimé, ton mouvement de spontanéité. Tu peux m'écrire en français tant que tu veux! - I often forgot it's not as natural for everyone. But, like you said... this feeling of exclusion...no intention.

Michel Garneau is reading the poems very beautifully also.

This is no weak poetry in any sense of the term.

That was great.

Je ne comprends rien de vos conversations françaises, Thoco et Muddy. Parce que je parle le Français comme un vache espagnol, I better keep on writing English.

Maybe we can find someone who recorded that hour?

Most of the time the shows on Radio-Canada are not archived on the day the show is aired but in the following days. We should check the site again over the weekend.

J'ai moi aussi été très touché par les traductions et les lectures de Michel Garneau...

Very interesting to hear about the deep influence LC has had also on the east side of Saint-Laurent boulevard.

Simon, je suis tombée mercredi dernier sur un poste de radio. Ce matin là : Louis Amstrong, Sylvain Lelièvre, et tutti quanti. QUE de la bonne musique qu'on entend pour ainsi dire jamais "ailleurs" (si tu vois ce que je veux dire - non je ne parle pas de Radio-Canada, voyons!! j'aime bien R-C -mais des postes FM en général ). Rare! Il paraît qu'il est nouveau : je te donne le lien.

Yes tchocolatl! Thanks for the link. That station had been long awaited for in fact and it's been a dream of the Spectra people for many years. It springs from the Montreal Jazz Festival organization which might explain the good quality feeling.

One thing leading to another (which is the beauty of the web), here is a link from Couleur Jazz for you. It anounces the release next monday of an album that will include a new cover of Dance Me To The End of Love. No doubt that we'll here it on Couleur Jazz pretty soon.

I'll certainly keep an ear up.

DMTtheEofL is beginning to compete Suzanne in number and Halleluja in intensity, in term of cover, these months.

BTW, At the end of L'obscure beauté du coeur, they played the cover by Peyroux, BuUuut just the first notes so to speak

This quote about les nuits de Montréal, was it another song from Samina? (I know this is an old song, but, I mean does she sing it?)

It was interesting what Adam said about his reaction to Leonard's work. How sometimes it spurs him on in his own efforts and at other times intimidates him. Leonard must be one helluva hard act to try to follow.
