Thanks for posting the revised map of Europe! I guess Slovakia is trying to move to warmer climes! (Mental note: don't take a car trip with GWB visiting).

Looking forward to hearing from Jurica, re the trip. My cousins live over there and I'm sure they have plenty to say.

Meanwhile, over here we have had Freddy and Mary visiting us.

hi guys.

nothing much to report. i had real good time, and was impressed by their incredibly cheap food. you can go out to the good restaurant, eat a fine dinner and pay 3 Euros.

quite a nice town also.

and yes, i met a Canadian girl (Newfie) who never heard of Leonard Cohen. i tried with singing Suzanne, So long Marianne, Halelujah... nothing.

and i thought Leonard was a sort of a 'houshold' name in Canada, like a similar artist, Arsen Dedic, is in Croatia. you won't find a lot of people who'll know how to sing all of his songs, or know titles of his books, but you'll never find anybody who has never heard of him.

strange.

btw. the whole Bush thing was a little irritating, since there were a lot of police on the streets, and i learned who were the two most paranoid countries in the world. you can guess that USA is one. their ambassay is surrounded with three meters high vired fence (i did not try if it would electricute me), and another is Croatia. ours is surrounded with even higher walls. like a fortress. i'm afraid that i wouldn't be able to enter even if needed some assistence. Britishs are the opposite: free library, free internet, nice personel...

Jurica, Newfies are know to have a very particular sense of humour (in self-defence perhaps?) good for you that Leonard Cohen is not a choreographer also.

I always find it apalling how many fellow canadians have not heard of leonard cohen. I myself just left a dance, I was talking with a lady that asked me what kind of music I listen to? I replyed all kinds like most people say. I then decided to say my favorite is leaonard cohen she had no idea who that was. I said susan was his first hit, being a bad judg of age and thinking that she may be familiar with it. Then stated bird on awire and dance me to the end of love trying to think of songs that would be most popular and recognizable, nothing. Somehow I have found a way to accept these types of interactions without getting mad. It amazes me that in almost half of the english classes I was in in highschool Leonard was at least mentioned. Most of the people my age(25) have heard of him because of this and yet canadians that grew up when he may have been more popular (I have read on this site that they even played him on the radio at one time) have never heard of him.

I had heard of him before but couldn't give a song or album title. Went on holiday last year and got talking to an ex army chap in his fifties and he told me Leonard Cohen was his favourite artist. Sounded like my cup of tea and bought two cd's. Awesome, just starting out but looking forward to the ride.....

You should have tried Bird on the... I think just about everyone has at least heard of that one.

You are right though, too many Canadians aren't familiar with Leonard. The CBC is doing a best 50 tracks series. Leonard didn't make the 60's with Suzanne although he did make the list for the 80's with Tower of Song. The public outrage was so overwhelming on Suzanne, they may let him in for that later. Oh, this youger generation...

We know who he is, that's what matters.

Were you maybe, singing? With some, singing the tune helps, with others, singing the tune does not help.

Either way, if Bird on...didn't strike a memory, not much else would.

Yes, it seems those of us over...? know who Leonard is. I think that after all this time, he should be compulsory reading in high school. I think the educators find him a little too, hmm, edgy. As if Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson are not...? Anyway, I think Leonard will go down as one of our best.

I hope you like it here and enjoy Cohen as much as those here do. I knew of him for a wile but fell in love with the music a few years ago. I just picked up the last of his albums(with exception of some live and best of that I do not have) I love all of them.

I am not a Newfie but I am from the prairies and I think some of the humor is similar or at least recognizable. I told a farmer joke wile I was working in ottawa and the only person that understood it and laghed was a Newfie. everyone else just staired at eachother wondering what we were laghing about.

are you a Newfie?

Don, unfortunatelly, in term of this link I am relating to the "Offensive for all" section" and even there, no jokes about "me" Just too bad. The proof of me being completely drab. People only laughed about interesting people.

The humour seems to me the same more or less everywhere but some people are considering these kind of jokes as stupid, humour in general a completely stupid, (unless they are used as a weapon to hurt somebody - the club-the wheel- the mind

) and seriouness sadness as deep and as intelligent. It is all prejudice but ey! Eintein

said it was more difficult to broke than an atom. I guess his joke can not be qualified of stupid, just because he is who he is. Prejudice, prejudice!!
