Fool If You Think It's Over

Post by YankovicGretzky »

Fool (If You Think It's Over)
(Chris Rea)

Dyin' flame, you're free again
Who could love, and do that to you
All dressed in black, he won't be coming back
Save your tears
You've got years and years

The pains of seventeen
Unreal they're only dreams
Save your cryin' for the day

Fool if you think it's over
'Cause you said goodbye
Fool if you think it's over
I'll tell you why
Newborn eyes always cry with pain
At the first look at the morning sun
Fool if you think it's over
It's just begun

Miss Teenage Dream, such a tragic scene
He knocked your crown and ran away
First wound of pride, and how you cried and cried
But save your tears, you've got years and years

(Fool if you think it's over)
(Fool if you think it's over)

I'll buy you first good wine
We'll have a real good time
Save your cryin' for the day
Fool if you think it's over
'Cause you said goodbye
Fool if you think it's over
I'll tell you why
New born eyes always cry with pain
At the first look at the morning sun
Fool if you think it's over
It's just begun

New born eyes always cry with pain
At the first look at the mornin' sun
Fool if you think it's over
It's just begun

I might be wrong , but I think Elkie Brookes recorded this before Chris Rea. I have an album of hers as well as Chris Rea's version.

Elkie Brooks did indeed record Fool If You Think It's Over, beautifully.

I am a big fan of Elkie. I think she is the best female blues singer we have in England.

Her concerts, and I have been to dozens over the years, are always astounding. She recently performed at Ronnie Scott's in London and sold out the whole week.

I think her time is coming at last and we will hear a lot more about our Elk over the coming months.

Look out for her new album, Electric Lady, released in March. Tracks include :
Outta The Rain *

Electric Lady *

Muddy Water Blues *

Try Harder *

Roadhouse Blues *

Groom Still Waiting At The Altar *

So Good Looking

Trailer Trash

The Brighter Side

White Girl Lost In The Blues

Back Away *

Tracks marked * were previewed by Elkie in the second half of the 2004 tour. And they were the highlights of all Elkie's concerts last year.

Elkie set out to make a Blues album in response to the emails sent in by fans on her site, but along the way it evolved to include a bit of Country, a bit of Rock, and some haunting ballads all touched by that pure Elkie magic.

She is still going stong at 60, and I hope she will be for many years to come. :)

I'm not familiar with her either. She's from England? I'm always on the lookout for new female blues/jazz singers. Unforutnately, this place in which I live is a 'country' town. Not likely to run into Elke here. But there are many alterntatives. Thanks for the info.

If you go to http://www.elkie-brooks.com you will find lots of information about Elkie.

Elkie started out with Robert Palmer, sadly passed on now, in the rock groups Dada and Vinegar Joe. They split in the early 70s and Elkie then went on to have a very successful solo career, as did Robert.

She never really made it in America, mainly due to decisions she made back in the early 80s. She was having fantastic success here, hit after hit with songs such as Pearl's A Singer, Lilac Wine, Fool If You Think It's Over, Sunshine After The Rain, Nights In White Satin, Runaway.... an endless list. Sold out concerts constantly.

Elkie's heart though lay in music such as jazz and blues and she wanted to record more of it, as well as her own songs. The record companies at the time, mainly A&M wanted her to stick to the winning formula and promote her in America where they were certain she could have success, but Elkie wanted to stay true to her heart.

I'm happy that she made this decision, she has recorded some classic albums since then, 'Round Midnight, Nothin' But The Blues, Trouble In Mind and her concerts are amazing. She is the best live singer I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot these past years. I really can't reccomend her enough. :)

Roadhouse Blues was a rocking blues number when Elkie performed it live last year, but I am not sure if it is the same song that the Doors performed. I'll know more when I hear the album in a couple of weeks. :)

Hi Dylan,

A few of the key lines in the Doors' song is:

Woke up this mornin' and I got myself a beer
Woke up this mornin' and I got myself a beer
Goin' to the Roadhouse and we're
Gonna have a reeaal good time

Doesn't sound like a song the Lady you're talking about covered this one. But you never know. A lot of people have success with songs one wouldn't ordinarily associate with them. Like Johnny Cash and the Nine Inch Nails tune.

Anyway, it has been like this forever. Artist has great voice and gets signed by record company who wants them to sing, I dunno, Elvis covers, the artists hates the idea, but does it because they signed a contract saying they would and they then get stuck in a bad place for a while.

Sounds like Elke got out, good for her - the world needs as many good blues/jazz singers as it can get. In my opinion. A lot of artists, no matter what they're doing on stage/recording, do have a love of and roots in the blues. Many good blues musicians from England, too. Even though it's an American musical form.

Years ago, I loved people like John Mayall, John Baldry, even Fleetwood Mac started out doing blues (different players except for the two leaders). Even Jimmy Hendrix started out in England. Hmm. I think I'll ask the Government for $250,000 to do some kind of study.

See you,
Linda.

well, you said she covered "nights in white satin," too? that's a moody blues song. while that song may not be talking about beer, hahaha, it's still kind of a rock song. a little slow and mellow, haha, but it's from a rock band nonetheless. who knows, though, some people change lyrics around a bit when they cover songs. like i recorded a cover of country joe's "kiss my ass," and changed the lyrics so it talked about the war in iraq instead of the vietnam war. hahaha.

Linda, that's the one. Elkie did a stroming version of it live. The album looks like it is going to get a lot of coverage this time around.

Teratogen, Elkie made such a success with Nights In White Satin, thatI think even the Moody Blues said she out-did them at one point. It is allways a hightlight of her concerts.
