Can anyone think of a current recording artist who has not covered Hallelujah?

Kathryn Williams is superb.

Nick Cave didn't. He wrote his own version

I actually preferred the John Cale version. Didn't know he'd done it until I settled down to watch Shrek video with my then 3 year old, and was stunned. Have subsequently realised that the makers of the Shrek movies have a rather fine taste in music- with Shrek 2 containing songs from among others Nick Cave, Tom Waits and Eels.

However on buying Jeff Buckleys Live in Chicago DVD I found the ultimate version a lot better than the version on Grace.

It is one song of Leonard's that a lot of people think theycan cover but really can't.

It's been played lots of places thousands, but I still think Jeff Buckley's
version is without comparison. Rufus Wainwright does an OK job of it,
but Jeff's is otherworldly.

I haven't heard all of them obviously, I hear there's quite a few.

KD Lang does a good job on Hymns of the 49th Parallel. Jeff Buckley's is the best and Rufus Wainwright's is quite good. I haven't heard the Bono version but suspect he doesn't have the right pipes. Would have loved to hear Johnny Cash do it (his Bird on a Wire is superb). As long a Celine Dion never tries it we will be okay...

There is a very popular TV contest going in Norway this spring, called Idol. I guess some of you will know about it from your own country.
By now, there are 4 participants left of originally 12 making it to the final rounds.
I have been following the contest every week since I first heard young Erik Flaa (21) singing Hallelujah in a very charming way, obviously inspired by Jeff Buckley. Erik has managed to stay in the contest week by week, but till this day I still think Hallelujah is the best - although his covering of Hurt by Johnny Cash actually became his breakthrough with many.
Well, I keep crossing my fingers..... quite honestly I would want him to end up as number two or three instead of one, as the Idol concept is not really his style. Somehow he deserves better, if you know what I mean.

So - what do you think? After all, he is just an ordinary young man with an interest for good music, "born with the gift of a golden voice".

Few months ago, Croatian Idol (version titled Coca-Cola Music Stars) finished with its male winner singing Hallelujah in final evening, on piano...

Seems like Croatian Idol, with or without Coca Cola, has more quality than here.....

Last night, my personal favorite Erik was most undeservingly voted out of contest, after a fine rendition of Keane's Bedshaped. Sigh. He always chose such beautiful songs.... Still, ending up as number 4 is not bad at all. I won't be surprised if he is back soon. Also, I suspect he caused a handful of new Cohen fans among the audience.
