i wrote this about 10 years ago, but for now it is especially for 'elazar' whom i "owe one." cheers, Laurie
How To Get A Poem
Chop down a lovely tree
And grind it to a pulp
Squeeze it into paper
And give to poetic folk.
Provide them all with plastic pens
To spill their purple gush
Point them towards a garden path
But never bid them rush!
Of course a winter’s night will do
Or storms of any kind
Let them simmer gently
In their own creative minds.
Do not fear those soft, low moans
That hatching poems may cause
And check their status faithfully
For painful writers pause.
A peaceful calm will rise
Like steam upon a lake
When poem and poet both agree
On the road they both must take.
Accept the poem with steady hand
Step back and clear your throat
(They’ll watch your face intently
For reaction to what they’ve wrote)!
A tender touch is needed
At this most critical stage
To keep your flock from flying
Into poetic fits of rage.
My advice for this moment,
Is to smile and give a sigh
Praise their work most graciously
And bid them all goodbye.

I second Elazar, wow. Laurie you have discovered that you don't own a poem, it owns you, and now and again you and the poem share each other. And if its this good, the pair of you share it with us. Thanks.
"Bipolar is a roller-coaster ride without a seat belt. One day you're flying with the fireworks; for the next month you're being scraped off the trolley" I said that.
