Absent Friend is a new book on Leonard by Irish novelist and memoirist, John MacKenna.
Leonard and MacKenna were friends for thirty years and the book draws on their conversations and Leonard's songs to produce a reflective and incisive picture of a friendship.
Robert Kory writes: 'Few journalists or writers enjoyed Leonard's respect and trust as much as did John MacKenna. This book is of great importance to anyone wishing to understand the unique artistry of Leonard.'
The Irish Times describes it as: 'A heartwarming and realistic encomium for a man MacKenna describes as a genius, yet someone whose humility was deep and real...wry, full of comradeship (and) intuitive understanding.
The book was launched in Ireland on April 3rd by actor and writer Gabriel Byrne and is available at
