The December 2022 issue of "Forbes" contains a rather macabre article titled "Top-Earning Dead Celebrities of 2022,"
and Leonard's name is mentioned in it.
He is number 7 on Forbes' list, his estate is estimated to have earned $55 million this year. The bulk of the $55 million apparently relates to the 2022 purchase of Leonard's catalog by the music management firm Hipgnosis.
Ahead of Leonard on the 2022 list, from number one to number six, are J R R Tolkien - $500 million, Kobe Bryant - $400 million, David Bowie - $250 million, Elvis - $110 million, James Brown - $100 million, and Michael Jackson - $75 million.
I like to think that Leonard would have something humorous to say about all this.

for those who didn't know (like me) who kobe bryant is/was. according to google it's a man who died in his 40s, who played basketball - a game where a ball has to be put into a basket. boring stuff by the sound of it, but probably interesting to those with limited intellectual pursuits. i believe all the other names in the list will be quite well known to everyone.its4inthemorning wrote: ↑Fri Dec 09, 2022 6:25 pm Ahead of Leonard on the 2022 list, from number one to number six, are J R R Tolkien - $500 million, Kobe Bryant - $400 million, David Bowie - $250 million, Elvis - $110 million, James Brown - $100 million, and Michael Jackson - $75 million.

I resemble that remark! Kobe Bryant could have stood in for the dancers in many of Leonard's work-to watch him play basketball was like to watching a master doing a ballet.Geoffrey wrote: ↑Fri Dec 09, 2022 10:51 pmfor those who didn't know (like me) who kobe bryant is/was. according to google it's a man who died in his 40s, who played basketball - a game where a ball has to be put into a basket. boring stuff by the sound of it, but probably interesting to those with limited intellectual pursuits. i believe all the other names in the list will be quite well known to everyone.its4inthemorning wrote: ↑Fri Dec 09, 2022 6:25 pm Ahead of Leonard on the 2022 list, from number one to number six, are J R R Tolkien - $500 million, Kobe Bryant - $400 million, David Bowie - $250 million, Elvis - $110 million, James Brown - $100 million, and Michael Jackson - $75 million.

hello joe. good of you to respond. i have now a better understanding of mr bryant, and also of the game called basketball. he seems like a decent enough fellow. during interviews he uses 'you know', 'like' and 'man' quite a lot - a good pointer to a person's brainpower. i put his I.Q. at somewhere between 95-98, just within the parameters of the average american.Joe Way wrote: I resemble that remark! after watching a few minutes of him participating in a game i did not notice too many nijinsky or nureyev moves, but then again if there is one thing i have in common with leonard it is zero interest in sport. however, mr bryant obviously excelled at playing with a ball, which is what he did his entire life. i respect that, because the world would be a lot less fascinating if we didn't have people on both ends of the intellect scale.

Dear Geoffrey, I just noticed your post and I thank you for replying to me.
I’m not so sure about your contention that Leonard was uninterested in sports, from what I recall he did play hockey in his youth. Now maybe because he wasn’t skilled enough, he lost interest.
While I do acknowledge that the uses of some filler words from Kobie Bryant are off putting, remember that he is an African American and his cultural and educational background did not enhance his verbal skills. I would hesitate to determine IQ based on this.
As for his skill level and how that relates to artistic ability, I’ll grant that there is truly no overriding standard to judge these things by.
I think that it is sad that all those mentioned in the article had so much ability that their earning power outlasted their lives and however shortened their lives, they were still creative enough to continue into the future that they would not realize.

Ha! I can't help myself here to post one of my favourite lay-back LC videos.
Click on just before 7mins to see and hear Leonard boasting about his sporting prowess in beating another famous Canadian at a sport you wouldn't expect he would be interested in, let alone good at
His demo is included - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZmi3BDSEM8

Ha, ha, Bev-Leonard Cohen, champion thumb wrestler! I think Geoffrey may discount it since there is no ball involved. Geoffrey is a dear friend and an uncompromising shit stirrer.

hi, bev and joe!
i don't remember the specifics, but one occasion concerning leonard and sport has always stuck in my mind, from near a time when the winter olympics were being held in his native country. leonard, appearing on some TV show, was humorously introduced as "the man who decided to leave home and go on a world tour to escape the olympics!"
always good to interact with you, even though you have this enfant terrible well and truly weighed up

Re: Leonard mentioned in "Forbes"
I'm guessing that the litigation between the family and management relates to whopping fees taken by management on the lump-sum payment received for the sale of LC's catalogue to Hipgnosis (which I have read is now not in the best financial shape).
