never-ending gallery
Re: never-ending gallery
so good of you to write something, lisa, especially as it's to a person who is not always good at responding.
these portraits of leonard are simply personal versions of photographs that can be found in various places. it is helpful for me to have an idea, though not a lot of thought goes into their production, no real energy spent on planning - mostly spontaneous stuff while listening to music, anything from clara butt to justin bieber - at the moment 'we come alive' by waykap. the cohen pic above was pencilled on the back of an ice lolly box. while on the subject of music: it was a mistake for leonard to record the embarrassingly titled 'don't go home with your hard-on'. it is neither clever nor funny - only banal. what he was thinking, i have no idea - but it did him no favours and failed to earn him much respect. i never play it, and am sure he must have later regretted it. i don't mind filth, love his 'beautiful losers' novel due to the use of original metaphors, but that song of his is beneath him - just boring.
i think you are onto something credible with the 'filling in the blanks' theory. john lennon's minimalistic self portaits are easily recognisable, as indeed are those by leonard - but this is helped by their inclusion of a caricaturistic element. for a portraitist looking for guaranteed success when making an interpretation of a known person it is imperative that they begin by working from a well-known photograph. as their competence improves they can move onto lesser easily identifiable photographs, perhaps with a more unusual camera angle that makes it more difficult for one's brain to 'fill in the blanks'. this is an area to which i have not given too much consideration, because to someone with no ambition 'guaranteed success' is a long way down any list of priorities.
we know what leonard looked like, and to draw his features close-up is therefore a challenge. it is much easier to draw a picture of jesus than of leonard, simply because no one knows what jesus' face looked like. i doubt that anyone unfamiliar with leonard cohen would realise just from seeing photographs that the man pictured early in his career is the same man pictured towards the end of his career.

Re: never-ending gallery
You haven't really changed all that much since the photo of yourself that you posted less than a month ago, other than your clothing. But, thanks nonetheless, just in case anybody forgot what you looked like and needed a reminder, or for those who may have missed all the previous photos of yourself that you have posted. Perhaps as a result of this latest photo, people all over the world may be spontaneously sketching portraits of you as they listen to music, so that all of us who have seen this photo and are now familiar with it will easily recognise their pictures as portraying you.
Re: never-ending gallery
well, for various reasons (privacy, bashfulness, poor self-image, shame, etc.) people are scared of revealing their current selves. i see it as my job to encourage honesty, openness and transparency, to show that it's not necessary to hide - but stand up and be proud of who you are. nevertheless, i could mention that of the multiple images posted in this column only an incredibly small percentage are of myself. compare this to leonard's output: his face adorned no less than eleven of his fifteen studio albums! admittedly, this was over a greater expanse of time, and yet - according to some of the greatest minds - time is merely an illusory conception. also, a free-thinking, intelligent mind pays little heed to correctness. the bottom line is that no matter what we do, none of it really matters in the end.

Two responses in one day! Geoffrey, I'm touched by all the attention!

Re: never-ending gallery
now i just wonder

Re: never-ending wondery
You are clearly a wonder-ful person, but are you a wonderful person? I suppose that one may wonder if you are wonderful or merely wonder-ful (although I am not one who wonders about that). Whatever the case, I think that this is sometimes a wonder-ful thread, and sometimes it is even wonderful, as are those who regularly participate in this thread (ie., both wonder-ful and wonderful). Isn't that wonderful (and/or wonder-ful?)? I think it is wonderful, and even wonder-ful, particularly if and when it makes me wonder. I wonder about a lot of things, and I find a lot of things to be wonderful. Isn't that wonderful? Or, is it just wonder-ful? Or both? Or neither? Or, is that something about which you do not wonder?
You did not indicate in your most recent post (quoted above) as to the object/subject of your wondering, that is, I cannot ascertain if there was/is a specific object/subject about which you "just wonder", or if you are merely in a general state of wonder (which is actually rather understandable, around here -- we can be a wonderfully wonder-inspiring lot, can we not?).

Leonard Cohen, in 'spice-box of earth', wrote: it is late afternoon. i have put beethoven on.
Re: never-ending gallery
thank you. no, did not listen to beethoven. this picture was done in minutes, as you can probably see. just a few charcoal lines before smudging them with fingers. i had been to the shopping centre to buy the ingredients for a meal (amongst other things), because there are new year's eve guests coming tomorrow evening before the fireworks start. while in 'the body shop' buying toothpaste and a couple of bars of 'british rose' soap someone tapped me on the shoulder. it was marit, wanting to wish me a happy new year. i said the same to her, and i told her how much i enjoyed our time together a few weeks ago when she played 'für elise', plus a couple of other pieces. beethoven is her big idol; she still has a picture i did of him ages ago hanging on her wall behind the piano. anyway, when i got back home today before i even put the food away and switched on the computer i just felt like doing another beethoven picture. like the opening of that 'rubber' movie - "no reason". so there was no music playing in the background at all. i did it quick because i was hungry and eager to make some spaghetti bolognese. as you know, i just love shops! sometimes i am just home reading the news and happily minding my own business when it's like my legs start carrying me down the stairs and out to the car, and before i know it i am parking the car at the shopping centre - and i am drawn by an invisible magnet in through the big revolving door. explain it those who can.

G--happy new year, and keep those drawings coming in 2022, I am sure that many enjoy your efforts beyond those who post here. Your reference to spaghetti bolognese made my mouth water! Over and out.

Re: never-ending gallery
thank you, and yes, i see by the astronomical number of daily hits that there are many silent introverts monitoring the activity taking place in this thread. however, it is crucial for my mental welfare - and for the continuance of these pictures - not to think about the responsibilty involved, for otherwise there would be a destructive pressure. i am conscious of my falsity when writing humbly about these pictures, because i am more than intelligent enough to recognise their high quality. if i may speak candidly, and at the risk of sounding boastful, i believe we all know and acknowledge that the existence of a gifted person such as myself is unquestionably a rare occurrence. knowing that one is amongst the most talented and prolific portraitists this side of the equator is truly a daunting reality. as muhammad ali said during an unguarded moment: "it's hard to be humble when you're as great as i am!"its4inthemorning wrote: ↑Fri Dec 31, 2021 2:29 am G--happy new year, and keep those drawings coming in 2022, I am sure that many enjoy your efforts beyond those who post here. As for your compulsion to go to busy shopping centres, "explain it those who can" you wrote. Ochlophilia, perhaps?

It's 2022
Same to you, Geoffrey, and also to Bev, Michael, Alan, Mat, Dan, 4 (I think I got all of the more recent posters), and, of course, to anyone and everyone else who may drop by here from time to time (and even those who don't) -- all the very best wishes for 2022.
