Beause the main aim of his work is surviving. When you achieve understanding that all his songs go beyond pain and melancholy to find chatarsis and some deeper meaning of life, you'll grow to appreciate his work even deeper. Then you'll not see any sucidal tendencies.

Not bad...

But do you think that he has never thought to suicide in his life ? If your answer is "no never", my answer will be "probably"... Think about that.

His only song which openly speaks about suicide is "Dress Rehearsal Rag" from late 60s. As far I remember, he did say in 1979 "It's even late for suicide now."

People who talk or sing about suicide rather than committ it are often seeking pity or sympathy, another way of saying reaching out for love, or dramatically attracting attention to themselves when they feel neglected. They have no intention of committing suicide. It's the ones who tell no-one but secretly plot the deed that are serious and frequently wind up dead.

lightning, that's a common mistake. it's not true.

the fact is that most people who commit suicide talked about it a lot before doing it, but were often ignored. it's now in many psychology and self-help books, and we even learned it in school (probably not to ignore if our close friends start to talk about it).

very rarely someone commits suicide 'out of blue'. it does happen, but , like i said, rarely.

This is my understanding of the psychology too & is backed up by experience. Two friends of my killed themselves many years ago and both of them talked about suicide before they did it. In one case he even talked very specifically about how he would do it...... so if anyone mentions it to you, take them seriously.

Could be true but in the case of Leonard Cohen it was just a dramatic pose. He never even attempted it as far as we know.

I would have thought he had thought about it. Hasn't everyone? I also think it is a misconception to discount people who have talked about suicide from doing it. I know some one who killed themselves after threatening to do so. Never assume they will not.

Just because Leonard wrote a song about committing suicide is no reason to assume he was considering it for himself. He wrote a song about terrorists taking Manhattan too.

But Leonard didn't. In either case. That was my point.
