Music box thing on "Sisters of Mercy"

Does anyone know what that winding/ringing sound is on "Sisters of Mercy"? It sounds almost like a broken music box. Is it some kind of tape loop? It's driving me nuts trying to figure it out.

On the original recording, I think both accordian and xylophone were used, to great effect.

That should read "accordion". I'm not hitting the right buttons the way I used to.
