De Amerikaanse duizendpoot schrijft liedjes met Leonard Cohen en produceerde zijn laatste twee albums, Old Ideas en Popular Problems. Sowieso geen kleine jongen, want eerder werkte hij met grootheden als Roger Waters, Bryan Ferry, Elton John, Bon Jovi en, niet in de laatste plaats, Madonna. Gevraagd hoe het Cohen momenteel vergaat, vertelde Leonard dat de bejaarde bard binnen enkele maanden met een nieuw album komt.
We hebben dan al zo'n twee uur kunnen genieten van de muziek van Leonard Cohen, uitgevoerd door de glorieus uit de hand gelopen hobbygroep van Nits-voorman Henk Hofstede. Cohen’s populariteit is de laatste jaren alleen nog maar groter geworden en de vraag naar concerten van het Avalanche Quartet steeg navenant. Zondag was de aftrap van een liefst drie maanden durende theatertournee, waarbij zo nu en dan gasten acte de présence zullen geven. In De Kleine Komedie waren dat behalve Patrick Leonard de zangeressen Divya Boon en Fréderique Spigt, die haar machtige strot opengooide tijdens Almost Like The Blues.
Het Avalanche Quartet blijft vaak respectvol trouw aan de oorspronkelijke arrangementen, zij het zonder daarbij moeite te doen om Cohen te imiteren. Gelukkig houdt men zich verre van het inmiddels morsdood gezongen Hallelujah. Natuurlijk brengen ze wel diverse klassiekers, waaronder Take This Waltz, So Long, Marianne en Bird On A Wire, maar ook minder bekende nummers als You Know Who I Am en In My Secret Life komen langs. Hofstede is de vocale hoofdvertolker, die Marjolein van der Klauw soms de eerste stem gunt, terwijl er ook vaak prachtig vierstemming wordt gezongen.
Het fijne van het Avalanche Quartet is dat het volledig akoestisch is. De gitaren van Hofstede en Van der Klauw, de piano en accordeon van De Dijk-toetsenist Pim Kops en de grootse contrabas van Arwen Linnemann zorgen voor een weldadig geluid, dat de nieuwere nummers vaak meer recht doet dan de soms ronduit lelijke elektronische begeleiding op Cohen’s albums. De lichtelijk schutterige presentatie van Hofstede is charmant, net zoals zijn verhalen over Hydra, het Griekse eilandje waar Leonard Cohen ooit woonde.
