Merle Haggard ~ Unforgettable

We spoke of the fightin' side of the branded man - his recently released new album - Unforgettable - is more like his soft romantic side. Twelve superbly performed standard pop classics from another era (Unforgettable, Stardust, As Time Goes By etc ) accompanied by soft yet intricate jazz arrangement that sits very comfortably beside the Madeline Peyroux CD on my shelf. The famous coffee liqueur baritone is in superb form gliding quite effortlessly over an octave. Truly, "the bottom's low, the treble clear". The one original song blends seamlessly with the others and sounds like it could have been written 60 years ago.
This ain't no okie from Muskogee, more like the kid from Hoboken, NJ.

. The album does sound like it's very good, too. I'd love to hear those songs done by him. I'm glad he decided to do such a recording.

Actually I take back the last line....he sounds more like Dean Martin (with a greater vocal range) than the kid from Hoboken.

On another note, I've also ordered Allison Crowe's album Tidings from amazon. I only recently heard her stuff from a link somebody posted and I think she has an incredible voice.

I'll try to get the new Merle Haggard album these days, and the "Tidings" as well. Allison's recordings as far as I heard them from her site are convincing enough.

Thanks for the descriptions, Kush. If Merle keeps what you promised, I'm looking forward to a great bottle of red red wine.
