Well, ... maybe this one:

Which song started off as a song called "I Cried Enough for You"?

Yes, it is, Suzanne.

I just read your description of Leonard's banter during the RAH concert. Thanks. - When I have the time, I'll have to look whether I can find a recording of this somewhere on the Internet.

Thanks Hartmut ;-)

Now here’s a two pronged question to answer with each at opposite ends of the sentiment spectrum for Leonard :) Both these statements below are derived from a published phone interview between LC and The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper to promote one of his previous visits to Australia.

1. This song is one of Leonard’s personal favourites as regards people covering his songs.
LC said it was pushed right over the edge by the singer ;-)

2. This song is one of Leonard's that he said he hates.
But I don’t think it’s because there are two famous people casually involved in its making

Hm ...

1. 'Over the edge' ... Is that an allusion to U2? Then you could be talking about Bono's version of 'Hallelujah'. Though it seems unlikely to me.

2. 'Two famous people' ... Is it a song from the DoaLM album?

Haha! Hartmut, you’ve unconsciously done it again! “it was pushed over the edge” has nothing to do with U2/Bono or Hallelujah but it is a very apt clue about the title of the song. The singer who covered this song is an Australian.

No2 is indeed a song from DOALM. The two singers spontaneously assisting LC with this song are both American.

All singers are male. The tour and interview were in 1985.

I believe Bob Dylan & Allen Ginsburg sang on DOALM & I think the song they sang on was: Don't Go Home With Your Hard-On (?).

That’s right, Rachel :D
2. LC said: “I hate the song with Bob Dylan and Alan Ginsberg in it, I feel very uneasy about it, but they just dropped around to the studio and we ended up doing a song together”.

and now for No 1....this song began as a poem titled as the first line of the song :)
The same Australian artist who covered it in 1984 has recently recorded a very different new version in 2015.

Sadly, the only Australian singers I know are Paul Kelly, Kylie Minogue, and Nick Cave.

So I'll go with Mr. Cave.

He covered Avalanche and Suzanne. And maybe more songs.

My gut feeling is you mean Avalanche. But I think Suzanne started out as a poem. Don't know whether this is true about Avalanche as well.

Ok, Google tells me you're most probably talking about Avalanche. (I used the search phrase: 'What song is Bev talking about?' Sometimes Google is amazing.)

hehe! Hartmut, Google is very clever sometimes

Nick Cave and Avalanche is all you need!
Sydney Morning Herald 28th April 1985 – Cohen in with the best – Rock Beat by Stuart Coupe

“Amongst his personal favourites is a recording by an Australian, Nick Cave who Leonard said: ‘pushed Avalanche right over the edge, and that’s a good song to do it with.’”
Below are both version:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPPO2zdPxyU From Her To Eternity
this first cover is sure pushed over the edge alright!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_iveMTyxH4 Black Sails
I’m not generally into covers of LC but this is a great version – love the strings and piano!

Over to you Hartmut or Rachel.

Thanks for the links!

I think Rachel deserves to take her turn.

Well, I don't think I necessarily deserve anything, but since Hartmut makes his suggestion so politely, ok . . .

I'll go with a less info-oriented question: There are at least 2 songs with lyrics which associate exhaustion & salvation. One song's lyrics make an obvious association; the other might not be quite as obvious. Please name the songs & lyrics.

Hi holydove,

For the obvious association, I'll go with "Crazy to Love You" because of these words: "Been saved by
a sweet fatigue." For the other, "The Faith" might fit the bill with: "O love, aren't you tired yet?"

Hi Steven,

You are totally correct about Crazy To Love You. And The Faith is a great answer, but I'm thinking of yet another song. Let's see if you or anyone comes up with something else before I give a clue. . .
