What are copyright issue with use of tune with other words

We have put the some Christian words to Hallelujah for use in a small congregation. There is no commercial purpose, but we do not want to infringe on the good work done on the song. How do we request permission to use the tune in our church? does anyone know how to start that process? Does Sony have the copyright?

Yes, it's Sony to start with. Unfortunately it will be a VERY long process.

I suppose it is a "used with permission" authority we are looking for. In a non-commercial environment there is no revenue-sharing opportunity for Sony, but we could certainly provide some compensation appropriate with the usage. Would it be Sony in New York or how would one initiate the process? With Cohen's Canadian connection, and a religious purpose, would he not be involved?

Sony Canada owns the rights. They are in Toronto.

I understand that SONY has never given permission for Leonard's songs to be re-written. There was an article late last year wherein Cloverton claimed they had SONY's permission for their "Christian" version of Hallelujah. I have since learned that permission was never given.
