The issue isn't hot now and most people wouldn't know what it was but the Orgone Accumulator was first rented during the time of Reich's trial and when he was condemned it was outlawed and it would have been illegal to ship it back. Even stranger that they put a brilliant and unusual doctor in prison for his work, drove him to madness, despair and death. My friend was working as a medical librarian and was in therapy with a first generation disciple of Reich ( a man who actually studied with him). Both doctors Reich and his disciple worked in Forest Hills Queens, a subway ride away from New York City. His doctor was also imprisoned and driven to suicide. My friend did research for Reich's defense but Reich presented his own , to paraphrase, " The laws of man cannot override the laws of nature." He lost his case and was sent to jail. Reich's work survives in the New Age movement and we can't forget that he told us to smile, it creates happiness.

Considering that Wilhem Reich's mother commited suicide after he told his father she was having an affair with his tutor, considering that he was a communist in the USA, the ending of his career makes sense what ever this career would have been, and the beginning of his career makes sense in view of... freudian theories. As well as the concept of orgone is similar to Freud's concept of Eros.

The sexual revolution is done. Good.

Anyway, Freud is just an artefact of the past. To compare his theory with the present bio sci. does not have any sense. But even though the "mechanic" of the brain is well known, the bio does not explain everything. Psychology is still needed to find some answers.

It is amazing the conversation people have at funerals!

Rest in peace Susan Sontag. Thanks to have been a pacifist, particularly in 2001 and after.

Last posting here about W.Reich:

Dear lightning,

it still is illegal even today in the USA, 50 years after Reich death, to ship orgone accumulators from one state to the other much more to try to use it for medical experiments.

Freedom of speech, knowledge and research at work in the "Big Democracy"!

Dear Dem,

Some of the brightest Greek minds are conducting cutting-edge research in the "big Democracy". Off the top of my head I can name three in a single department alone in my alma mater (Ioannis Tollis, Simeon Ntafos, Rym Mili).
Nothing in the quality of your posts has made ever made me suspect that you might be in such exalted company.

Have a good day.

Dear Kush

that doesn't sound like Cash, or Dylan. It rather sounds like Merle Haggard:
When they're runnin' down our country man,
They're walkin' on The Fightin' Side Of Me.

Kush:

Here's to "some of the brightest Greek minds" that work so hard for the American Imperium!

(And if you ever meet one of them - highly unlikely- ask them if they ever decided to work in the (controversial) field of "Orgonomy" do they really think they would be free to contact the kind of research they'd like)

Cheers!

Dear Tom,
It is not my style to insult or ridicule other nations or peoples (except in jest or lighthearted humor). However, individuals (or frustrated losers) who indulge in that sort of thing consistently over a long period of time are fair game. :)
From anyone else I would have probably found it funny but this loser irritates the hell out of me.

I'm wondering if the reason it's illegal to ship them is because of the fraudulent claims. In another thread, I think Dem said they were just metal and wooden boxes. If so, the makers and shippers must be making a claim for these "boxes" that don't hold up scientifically. Making it fraud...especially if they are making medical or health claims.

Weren't the original accumulators supposed to ship with some kind of radium. Didn't Reich's head turn blue and nearly drop off working with these radium-enriched accumulators?

I'm sure he was a genius but from what little I've read he was also CRAZY.
but this loser irritates the hell out of me.
Amen to that! :) Here's to Merle Haggard!

Dear Kush,
I know. That's why I stumbled into a response.

As to Merle Haggard - I got most of his records, and I sometimes even listen to them, though I surely ain't an Okie from Muscogee...

Midnight ~ The problem is you risk "walkin' on the fightin' side of" some people not "when you're runnin' down our country", but when they imagine you to do so.

Back to Banjos, Tom. ;)

Cheers

Tom,

Well, I guess I can't do anything right. Thanks for the rebuke in the one thread in which I was not the one doing the snarking or the "fighting." I mean, I don't get it. Shouldn't some of this rebuke be directed at Dem.

no rebuke intended. Sorry if it sounded that way. You haven't been doing any "snarking" or "fighting".

It was just a general remark I adressed to you for the simple fact that you, and not Kush, had referred to my Merle Haggard quote.

Here's to Merle Haggard, and here's to Willie Nelson, and here's to Mac Davis.

Well, thanks, everythings o.k. then. I'll blame it on the punctuation. :)

Midnight,
Back to the Orgone Accumulator, the one my friend is in possession of is an original, shipped from Rangely, Maine, Reich's Orgonon, and it didn't come with any kind of radium. If Reich experimented with radium I don't know about it. His "orgone energy" was not exactly physical, if I understand it right, rather like the Indian Kundalini or the Chinese Chi. The accumulator was supposed to concentrate this energy for whomever used it to promote healing and mental health.
My friend, now 81, would like to sell it as an antique or scientific curiosity but makes no claim for its efficacy. It is in New York and would have to be picked up as it is illegal to ship it state to state as Dem pointed out.

Tom, Midnight...did you know Merle Haggard came out with an anti-war song (as did Willie Nelson campaigning for Dennis Kucinic) recently on the album 'Haggard Like Never Before"....

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... ce&s=music

I love that song Fightin' Side of Me....something very human about it. But I think it should be taken with the previous two lines together...if I remember correctly it goes...

"Now I don't mind folks switchin' sides
And standin' up for what they believe in
But when they're runnin' down the country, man
They're walkin' on the fightin' side of me."

As for orgone accumulators and those folks etc... i think Lightning said it all...
You cite two largely discredited, though one time vogue-ish and interesting pseudo scientists.
