Question - Unreleased material from Leonard
Question - Unreleased material from Leonard
Hi,
I've mislaid a link to unreleased material by Leonard. I think it was either Tom or Maarten had compiled the list originally and put it out into the greater Cohen world. I wonder if someone could post the link.
Many thanks.
All the best,
Merton

Re: Question - Unreleased material from Leonard
Hi Merton,
Keeping track of all the unreleased stuff is Tom's job!
(well, "passion" is a better way to describe his obsession
)
Here's a link to Tom's post about it:
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=22041&p=277086#p281595
Hint: you can either "subscribe topic" or "bookmark topic" at the bottom of each page for easy reference later.
Let me (or Tom!) know if you need more info!
Maarten

Re: Question - Unreleased material from Leonard
Hi Maarten,
Many thanks. I didn't know about this list and it's good to have it. Am I wrong in saying that maybe Tom has a link to old live recordings dating back to to 70's ? I know somewhere I saw a link and listened to some of the material.
Maarten, again thanks for the link and the advice.
All the best,
Merton

Re: Question - Unreleased material from Leonard
Hi Merton,
Don't know what list did you see (well, now I want to find it too), but you may find these suggestions useful.
1) Five 70s bootlegs are listed here: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=27405#p278738
2) You should register at http://www.dimeadozen.org
This is, I guess, the main source of new (and renewed) LC bootlegs. All recordings are "of independent origin" (so called ROIO), so uploaders don't infringe copyright.
As a registered user, you'll be able to use search. Type +Leonard +Cohen +197* - and you'll find more bootlegs. The same with other periods and artists.

Re: Question - Unreleased material from Leonard
Indeed there was a webpage contacting all the unreleased stuff you're referring to, i.e. mp3 tracks from old RARE SONGS and RARE LIVE SONGS fan bootlegs. That page was hosted by our Forum member and old fan ~greg, but ~greg passed away recently and with time the site has been deleted.... the URL was http://www.twoshakesofalambstail.com/st ... index.html And here's the discussion about the page with ~greg, in happier days of this Forum:) viewtopic.php?f=12&t=3271
~greg's webpage contained archives of old Leonard Cohen Newsgroup from early 90s, and that was a gold mine, plus it had the page entitled Rare Live Songs which was actually mp3s made from fan-bootleg of the same name, containing Bryn Mawr performances of unreleased Songs for Rebecca album and other rare stuff from 70s and 80s.
Nevertheless, most of these songs, previously available on Rare Live Songs CDRs, were last year compiled again by DrHGuy and published for download on his blog - this CD, entitled The Other Leonard Cohen Album, was recently chose by Mojo among 50 best bootlegs:)
The download link is at: http://1heckofaguy.com/2010/01/25/now-a ... hen-album/
Most of 70s songs from Greg's website and Rare Live Songs CD are included on Another Other Leonard Cohen Album: download it at http://1heckofaguy.com/2010/05/20/prese ... hen-album/

Re: Question - Unreleased material from Leonard
As the unreleased stuff is in question, Maarten linked to my recent lists of post-Dear-Heather tracks, which now did not made it into the Old Ideas... But my earlier lists were at now defunct JF's website I'm Your Live Man, leonardcohelive.com.
In April 2011 I met Artur Jarosinski in Krakow - he took over I'm Your Man website from JF and he showed me the brand new design he was working on in his laptop. Sadly, Arturo died in accident in August, age 32........ He was "banalny" on dimeadozen.org and since he passed away the Leonard Cohen recordings and archives at dimeadozen.org are more or less dead.
For couple of years I believed that site is lost forever, especially since Artur died, but Goldin sent me recently the archived mirror copy of JF's website, it's at http://web.archive.org/web/200709201855 ... nlive.com/
The Leonard Cohen Store Room, with lists of all unfinished and unreleased sessions and album outtakes, is archived at http://web.archive.org/web/200709180712 ... reroom.htm - I think that's the list you are asking for:)

Huh, using Goldin's Internet WayBack Machine, this is how ~greg's page looked like, very simple: http://web.archive.org/web/200412121833 ... storeroom/
Of course, the mp3 links are all dead. But you can download those 2 bootlegs prepared by DrHGuy:)

Re: Question - Unreleased material from Leonard
Although many of us have the tracks on the list in some shape or form, I'm surprised that they didn't include a disk of these with the box-sets that have been released. Maybe, it will be included in some future compilation? I'm also surprised they haven't released more stuff on DVD considering the revived interest in LC, in recent years.
Re: Question - Unreleased material from Leonard
The most interesting part of this archive are transcriptions. Here's a brief overview of them.

Re: Question - Unreleased material from Leonard
Thanks, Goldin. It is nice (and sad) to see the work by gone fans saved in this way.
John, it may well be that these songs are not available in Sony archives... These are mostly audience recordings and almost all are impromptu improvisations or mocking covers, and it is known that Columbia didn't bother to record Cohen's shows... In 1988 and 1993 they recorded only shows in Canada (that's on Cohen Live), in 1979 they recorded Birmingham, Brighton and London and what survived from those tapes is on Field Commander Cohen... Tennessee Waltz on Dear Heather - Leonard personally took the radio bootleg and cut off the track (Jarkko sent him a copy)... Songs for Rebecca were erased by mistake... Poetry album recorded by Henry Lewy in early 80s was so badly archived it is claimed now it cannot be released (that's what Leonard wrote to the Forum few years ago)... There's almost none 1970 or 1972 shows I heard long ago... and IOW was pulled from BBC's tapes not from Sony/Columbia!
When Sony released the remasters of first three albums they didn't dig almost any of songs from sessions known by titles only, except two songs from Hammond sessions. I wrote to LC inquiring where are Priests, he answered that "they did not dig deeply enough". The list of early demos is at http://web.archive.org/web/200709152018 ... sdemos.htm plus there's that infamous 1966 acetate LP of which only one copy was heard of and all we got was its track listing as the owner wanted to sell it only to LC -> http://web.archive.org/web/200709140557 ... tate66.htm

Re: Question - Unreleased material from Leonard
I was wondering; sad? why sad? Then reading, I realized that probably you're right. I guess, saved this is a shared and collaborative hobby. We must enjoy it as we can. Leonard gave us his ancient priestly benediction at the end of a concert, so I have no fear of any curse. ~greg's work, part of Leonard 's work, is not lost, it has always available under request and now we can download it freely, in the spirit of two shakes of a lamb's tail (the ~greg's WEB was www twoshakesofalambstail)tomsakic wrote:Thanks, Goldin. For my organization, I changed the file names, but I think it's basically all.
Goldin; I have used your information in this post in order to short out the stuff. In the dropbox, you could find There Is A War, really great.
Tower Of Song and Who By Fire were taken from the show Sunday Night Live 1989 Feb. 13 with David Sanborn, Sonny Rollins and Was Not Was:
