Who can remember what made them buy their first LC vinyl?

Post by smile »

I can remember buying *the songs of Leonard Cohen * in 1969 in the UK. I was 15 and very much into blokes then not boys.I bought it because the good looking lads would always brag about this album and when I borrowed it I found it to be fantastic. I managed to convert my boyfriend in 1969 to the music and we have been married now 31 years....LC you hold a lot of memories for us

Hi Smile,

I bought it after my husband played it for me. We were separated and when I left to go 150 miles back north and not long after, fully apart, I wanted my own copy. Leonard has remained a link between us, with many memories as well, played and sung during our many visits and reconciliations. I would have preferred the continuity that you've had with your memories, however.

Yes, Smile, thank you. It's amazing the bonding effect that Leonard's words can have between two people, isn't it. It never goes away....divorce, many years and miles apart with different lives, and the impact is still profound.

I bought it in 1969, too after hearing "Sisters of Mercy" and "Hey That's No Way To Say Goodbye" on the first two "Rock Machine" albums (as soon as I heard "Sisters of Mercy", I knew I had found my world). However, I actually bought "Songs From a Room" first, since I was still wondering whether the rest of "Songs Of" would be as good as the two songs that I already had. Eventually, I took the plunge and bought it, and never looked back.

I listen to a lot of stuff like Low and Red House Painters... Codeine, those kinda bands. "slowcore" or whatever you wanna coin... Anyway about 9/10 years ago my dad was like "christ, this is depressing I bet you'd love Leonard Cohen" and gave me a cd he'd had lying around (it was the original best of). I did love it! The day after I found songs of Leonard cohen on LP at a second hand record store in Oldham (now sadly closed down) for just £1. Even though it's a pretty battered cover I've not replaced it because that is the way I first heard that album, every crackle and pop is a memory now. I'm only 25, so it's not like I had much choice in catching on so late!

In 1969 I was an impoverished student with no ready access to music - I don't think I even owned my own radio then.
A friend suggested we visit one of his other friends who had a turntable and some new records.
I had never heard of Leonard Cohen.
"Songs From A Room" was the first record played (it had just been released) and I was hooked after the first 2 lines of track 1 (Bird On A Wire).
"Songs Of Leonard Cohen" was next on the playlist. I have no recollection of hearing anything else that day.

It took a while before I could afford a turntable (getting a job after graduation helped) but Leonard Cohen albums have always been at the top of my playlist, including cassettes and now CDs played endlessly in my car.
I never encountered my friend's friend again, but no matter, he had introduced me to those magical lyrics and I am forever grateful as I set off on my life's journey with Leonard's music, hunting down each new album as it was released.
