Conway and Cohen: A Collaboration

Deborah Conway and Willy Zygier... Half Man Half Woman.

FOR musicians Deborah Conway and Willy Zygier, performing with internationally renowned artist Leonard Cohen was the culmination of a year of highlights.

Taking to the stage under the band name Half Man Half Woman, Conway described the experience of supporting Cohen at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena as amazing.

“It was fantastic, we had such a wonderful time,” she told The AJN. “He gave me a hug and told me that he had really enjoyed our set.”

Having seen him perform in Australia early in 2009, the Jewish songstress approached Cohen’s management to express interest in supporting his next Australian tour.

“I’ve loved Leonard Cohen for a long time. I think he’s better than he’s ever been. He has become an incredible, rich, layered performer,” she said. “I told them I would love to be able to do it.”

So what could have been better than taking to the stage before Cohen? The eight minutes where they performed a song off their recent self-titled release, a track called Take Pity on the Beast.

“It was favourably compared to one of Leonard Cohen’s songs,” Conway explained. “It’s always good when other people connect into it.”

It has been a busy period for Half Man Half Woman, with the band performing as support act to Brian Wilson earlier in the week, and its imminent concert tour around the country.

But it was certainly among the high points of 2010. “I’ve had lots of highlights of my year and this was another,” Conway said. “There were cries for an encore and it was great to make a positive impression. We sold 80 CDs on the night, which was a great endorsement.”

Does anyone know whether a DVD is going to be made available of the Melbourne November 12 concert? (There were signs up at the entrances that it was being filmed)
I for one would dearly love a copy of one such, as a record of an incredible night in my life.
None of the CDs I have do Leonard Cohen's voice justice, none reproduce the deep notes of his voice, especially as he speaks the lines, to such an effect as could be heard that night and I'd really love a copy if it ever becomes available.
