Those who have read Ira Nadel's and Sylvie Simmons' biographies will be familiar with Leonard's experiments in hypnosis and how he apparently got the maid to undress. I wonder whether Leonard saw this movie (with one of my favourite actresses) which was released around that time (1949):

Mary - I was thinking of Ferrer's words to Gene Tierney that you hear early on in the trailer...
something like: "Just close your eyes and forget.. your soul can undress in front of me". It's a great movie, by the way! I collect classic film noir, and just bought the BFI re-master of this.

Having watched that, I can imagine Leonard beating feet to the bookstore looking for any and all books on hypnotism
