Deep down in the bottle
El gusano is waiting (the worm is waiting)
To teach us his knowledge
Of women and love
With worm, salt and lime
I should taste of his wisdom
I should drink to her memory
Drink the golden mezcal
Mezcal by Tom Russell Band

I think Tom Russell is one of the (other) great songwriters.

Blood and Candle Smoke is a great album, his best since Borderland IMHO. His earlier songs were full of color, romance and adventure, like a novelist but always with gritty reality. There is an element of darkness and cynicism in many of newer songs. One of the older songs I heard for the first time not too long ago is Mineral Wells, one of the great love songs of the world I think - between "fatboy and aging film queen ....drinking vodka from a cheap styrofoam cup."
His new album Mesabi has some great songs as well but not quite as cohesive or consistent as Blood and Candle Smoke. From his new album:
Roll the Credits, Johnny

Road to Nowhere

Sounds good! This is probably the single most requested item in the history of our store: a songbook from Tom Russell. Tom takes it a step further by including short essays and antecdotes about the songs and their origins. Even if you've never picked up an instrument you will find plenty to enjoy here. It's been an extraordinary career, that is still going strong, and the stories behind these songs are as interesting, and enticing, as the songs themselves. Have your stacks of Tom Russell discs handy to use as a soundtrack as you wind your way through over three hundred pages of songs, stories, art and essays.
