Wittgenstein said:
‘Talk nonsense. It will do you no harm.’
I hold no dreams today,
they have all been drained
into the scorn of the wagtail
waiting on my garden fence,
and the fearfulness of the robin’s
presence; the compulsion
to separate scorn from her
waiting there and fearfulness
from the redbreast’s flitting,
and place them in a dream
that cannot be compelled.

I think you're quite right Jimmy but sometimes it takes more then just eyes and ears
Though the narrator says he has no dreams at the beginning, the piece itself feels dreamy to me, so wondered if N is speaking from a dream or perhaps is daydreaming. (you don't have to say if you don't wish to - I'm just sharing how I felt while reading)

we are surrounded by robins all winter... lots of them. they must like the trees.
and the bugs and seeds that surround them... the big trees up in the field draw them. I always thought robins went south.
