Post by jarkko »

The new documentary "What Leonard Cohen did for me'"
will be aired at 22.30 on 18th November 2004 on BBC4.

Do we have members in the UK who will be able to record it
on DVD (digitally if possible?) Please contact me at ja@nebula.fi

We get best quality if we find someone who owns a recordable DVD player. If the show is recorded on a DVD disc directly when it is aired,
the quality will be excellent. I don't know if BBC4 also sends the same transmission in digital format; if they do, the quality would be perfect!

Oops, that's what I was afraid of.....so count me out on any requests [at least at this point; though I can pay an additional $20 to get it transposed into the alternate mode]. Thanks.

I'll be recording this and have it available on VCD the following day. Haven't quite swung round to DVD-R yet. The title worries me a little - is this just going to be the great and the good talking about how super LC is, illustrated with archive clips (the BBC have plenty of those!) or can we expect some fresh material? A new interview or some performances of Dear Heather material perhaps? Here's hoping!
Cheers,
Stephen

Looks like we've now got at least one volunteer who is able to record it directly on DVD! Thanks Andy and Robin (I received a private email)!

The documentary is a new one, several artists who have recorded
Leonard's songs will be interviewed, including Nick Cave. Lizzie Madder will
speaking about Leonard's work as a member of our little "community". They may also show some Internet activities, and a lot of photos from
the archives. They use also some old stuff, like Leonard singing "The Stranger Song" (from the Julie Felix show).

This sounds excellent. I'll happily pay the extra $20 [here in the U.S. is where I can get that done] for the conversion. On DVD, not sure how that works with PAL, etc. This sounds very interesting. I'm so pleased that Lizzie will be included on it 8) :D 8) .

I can get BBC Four too but I know no one who has a recordable DVD such a shame. It will have to be on video for me too.

Jarkko will the people who can record on DVD be able to supply others if their costs are met?

Diamonds in the mine what is the difference between VCD and DVD is one just for the computer?

Hi Paula - VCD is lower quality than DVD (similar to VHS video) but was the cheap and flexible option until DVD costs started coming down. Given that a lot of the archive stuff that is circulating is only of average quality or less anyway and comes mostly from video sources it's been quite popular amongst traders for the last few years. Looks like DVD-R is here to stay though so I'm going to have to upgrade my collection at some point soon!
VCDs are created on bog standard CDRs and play on most DVD players and PC DVD drives worldwide, but like DVD-R, there are some compatibility issues - there's a very good web site at http://www.videohelp.com/vcd for more techie info.
It's important we preserve broadcasts in as high a quality as possible though, so I'm glad we've got some DVD recorders out there. I'll be round a-beggin' when I upgrade my PC.
Cheers,
Stephen
