Mike Randle's "My Music Love's You"
Interesting story behind this one. I discovered this in an HMV sale a few years ago for £1.99. I decided to buy it as a joke, and to show to Jim Devlin. When I looked at the sleevenotes, I suddenly saw the magic names Arthur Lee and Probyn Gregory (from Love and Brian Wilson's band). Putting two and two together, I suddenly realised that Mike Randle was the lead guitarist with Love and that I had recently seen him live. I e-mailed him via his web-site, and asked him if he liked Leonard Cohen. He promptly e-mailed me back, and said he loves Leonard's music. Since then I have met him many times and we have become good friends. He told me a funny story of how a friend of his went to a concert (I believe by Adam Cohen in LA) and saw Leonard standing outside. The friend approached Leonard, and said he had something to show him. He then handed Leonard the Mike Randle CD. Leonard was just about to sign it, when he was told to look a bit closer at it! At this point, Leonard burst into laughter and carried on laughing for what seemed like minutes. Eventually he said "Tell Mike Randle he done good!". As a footnote, I would like to put in a plug for Mike Randle's new CD "Barstool Blues" -
it has a relaxing laid-back Californian sound. One track "Cocktails for You"
is vaguely similar in style to Leonard's "The Smokey Life".
All the best, John E
