Singer k.d. lang is partnering with the Alberta Ballet for a new production called Balletlujah!

Alberta Ballet's artistic director, Jean Grand-Maitre, wants a huge splash to celebrate his 10th season as company artistic director, so he's pulling out the stops to make sure he gets it.

Lang, Alberta's claim to fame on the world music circuit, will be guest muse for Balletlujah!, a brand-new Grand-Maitre ballet set to bear fruit next May.

The news was announced at the season launch on Thursday.

The renowned singer follows in the footsteps (so to speak) of three previous Grand-Maitre big-time collaborators: Joni Mitchell, Sir Elton John and last season, Sarah McLachlan.

Grand-Maitre recalls lang's performance at the Vancouver Winter Olympics opening ceremonies - which he choreographed - as spectacular.

"k.d. waltzed in that morning and blew the roof off the stadium, because she's just that extraordinary," he says, laughing. "I said to her, 'We worked two years on that show and you stole it.'"

After sending lang's manager the media and video kits for The Fiddle & The Drum, Love Lies Bleeding and Fumbling Towards Ecstasy ballets, Grand-Maitre flew down to L.A. to confer with the singer/songwriter about her music and her life's journey.

While he has written a first draft, Grand-Maître said he’s still working on song selection. He does reveal lang’s cover of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah will definitely be included, as will her pop hit Constant Craving, along with a number of tracks from last year’s release Sing It Loud.
