Compassionate Moon

Post by hophead »

neon dreams break cover

along the outskirts

of the windswept city streets

where a compassionate moon

radiates, in the heart of a magenta sky

alluring

shimmering, like a beacon to misplaced sailors

who decline all invitations, due to prior engagements

as they have busy dance cards

A couple of years ago there was a contest here to write a poem about the moon. The outstanding entry and the clear winner was this by a woman called Harry S, who has now died. She actually explained her lines to assist the thicker members, (she would have loved that cock play) like she was some Lubricant Poet to help them get it in, so read the poem and the explanations in brackets.

Fuck the moon
And its indecision (waxing and waning)
And cream cheese beyond its sell-by date (moon made out of cream cheese)
And its selective romance (its everything if your luck is in, its a lamppost if not)
And its cloud disguise (obvious)
Fuck the moon
And its illegitimate sun (pun son)
And its yellow fever (obvious)
And its boast of stardom (star pun)
Fuck the moon
The golden boy of the Universe (obvious)
And its broken imitation of an egg (break it, fry it, yellow and round)
Panned by its critics (it's a pan pun upon)

I like this a lot hophead - great images. I'm not sure you need the last line, to me a stronger ending would be after prior engagements.

Is this a Toronto based poem... if so was it based on a specific area of town?

~~
ah Fish - I remember that poem ... a very good one indeed. My favourite line was actually in your add on, "(its everything if your luck is in, its a lamppost if not)"

btw, please stop fucking the moon and put it back already ... you must learn to share.

Thanks for the advise Cate.

I'm not too sure if it would be considered Toronto or Markham. It's the area around highway #48 and #7. I was driving back to the city from a friends up north when
this idea was formulating.
